Interview with Jim Goettler about the upcoming opportunity for non-profits to apply for new low-power FM licenses available in some areas for non-profit organizations. The Federal Communications Commission has set an October, 2013 deadline for groups applying for low-power FM stations. Goettler is a non-profit consultant, community organizer, and national political activist, and former board member for several nonprofits, including Reclaim the Media, and is a past president of the board of the Seattle Folklore Society. Legendary free jazz saxophonist David S. Ware died Thu., Oct. 18. We will play some of his most amazing moments. There is a memorial for him Jan. 7, 2013 in Manhattan.

"Ware's recorded debut was in 1971, on a privately-produced LP recorded by Abdul Hannah, an alto saxophonist from Boston. He went on to record with drummer Andrew Cyrille and pianist Cecil Taylor. In the late 1970s and early '80s Ware recorded more regularly as a bandleader, and formed his acclaimed quartet in the early 1990s. The quartet was originally composed of Ware, pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker and drummer Marc Edwards. The drum chair was later occupied by Whit Dickey, Susie Ibarra, and Guillermo E. Brown. The quartet released a string of well-reviewed albums mostly on small record labels, but saxophonist Branford Marsalis signed Ware to two-album deal with Columbia Records in the late '90s.[2] Ware dissolved the quartet in about 2007, after the release of the album Renunciation. He has since recorded albums for solo saxophone, and with several different supporting bands. Suffering from kidney disease, Ware was able to undergo a successful kidney transplantation at the age of 60, after receiving a kidney donated in response to an email message sent out to nearly 1,000 of Ware's fans." He was 62.

Two episodes of "Radia," including the most recent. "Radia" is a collective of international radio stations interested in new and forgotten ways of making radio art. Each week, one station in the group makes a show for all the others.

Following 2012′s reissue of “The Disintegration Loops,” now Auris Apothecary has reissued William Basinski’s debut album, “Shortwavemusic.” The record was recorded in New York in 1982, and first released by Raster-Noton in 1998. For the 30th anniversary of “Shortwavemusic” the label created a reel-to-reel version of the project for a Jan. 1 release. They’ve also made the music free and streamable online, and this show will tune it in. Plus, Myke Dodge Weiskopf curates "ShortWaveMusic," traveling abroad and recording shortwave radio and turning it in to beautiful collages, which will be heard here. Plus, a few Sublime Frequencies will be tuned in.

Two recent episodes of "Radio Theatre." First: "Enthusiasm! The Dombass Symphony" (1930) by Dziga Vertov, a symphony of abstract industrial noise for which a specially designed giant mobile recording system was constructed (it weighed over a ton) in order to capture the din of mines, furnaces and factories. Then: "In 1966, then General Manager for KPFK Los Angeles 90.7fm Paul V. Dallas decided to turn to the 24 hour fundraising Marathon technique to raise money for the stations operating expenses. Here is a 5 minute clip from September 13 1966 of a young Pre-Firesign Theatre Peter Bergman and Paul Robbins as they hosted phone calls in their own unique counter-culture way during KPFK's first Marathon fundrive. In the second clip then General Manager Paul V. Dallas speaks to the audience about the program Radio Free Oz after it's first 8 weeks on the air. KPFK was hit with a barrage of letters in support and against this Free Form Radio experiment hosted by Peter Bergman and Paul Robbins. Also included in this show is Dymaxion's "Chase Scene/Transistor Radio," John Ashberry's "Rivers and Mountains" from 1963, and Venus Flytrap from "WKRP in Cincinatti" explaining the atom."
