NWS gets more supercomputer power

Eric Holthaus reports in Slate that the National Weather Service.may have more accurate weather forecasts soon, with a new computing system that could be the ninth-most powerful supercomputer in the world, according to TOP500.org. "Nearly every entity that produces weather forecasts in the United States, from the Weather Channel to your local TV station, relies on the National Weather Service," according to the Slate story. Later this month, the NWS launches a major interim upgrade to its flagship weather forecasting model, the Global Forecast System, doubling the resolution of short-term forecasts.
