State police say 18-year-old Erin Clare Malloy-McArdle of Long Island hit a tree on Windham Mountain Sunday morning, and was not wearing a helmet. She died later in the day at Columbia-Memorial Hospital in Hudson. "This bill is about public safety," says Ortiz. "It's about saving lives, and it's a prevention mechanism to prevent accidents like this one from happening in New York State." The ski industry generally opposes such regulations.
