Taconic Hills continues digital conversion

Oct 01, 2014 12:30 am
Tobiah Black in The Columbia Paper reports that the Taconic Hills Central School District is considering having some students watch lectures online at home. At the Sept. 17 board meeting Teacher Leadership coaches Ryan Proper and Beth Flores discussed “flipped” classrooms, recording lectures for students to watch at home, so that classroom time can include more interaction between teachers and students and less lecture. “Do you think that enough of our kids have computers and Internet access at home?” asked Board member Anna Skoda, referring to the lack of broadband connectivity in parts of Columbia County. Flores said that lectures could be put on flash drives, and DVDs for some students. The board also discussed digital textbooks for the sixth grade class. Coordinator of Computer Technology John Dodds also said at the meetng, “We’ve received 100 sixth grade laptops,” and explained how a new web server for Taconic Hills students gives students Taconic Hills email addresses, with which they will be able to communicate only with other Taconic Hills students or teachers in an “archived and monitored,” environment.
