State extends review for West Point project

Melanie Lekocevic is reporting in The Daily Mail the state has extended the timeline on the review process for the power line proposed by West Point Partners. The extension was granted to give the company additional time to explore alternative routes, specifically an existing right-of-way owned by National Grid. West Point has been directed to explore the possibility of using lands adjacent to the existing route, which also runs through Greene Co. but mostly through uninhabited lands, and where power lines already exist. Under the proposal put forward by West Point a power line would be routed from a converter station, through the village of Athens' most heavily populated area and under the Hudson River to its ultimate destination in New York City. Opponents have cited a number of concerns, including safety, the impact on health and property values, and the effect the construction project would have on the community. According to the new schedule, the company has until Nov. 5 to identify an alternative route and converter station site. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
