Summer Reading is a national celebration of books and readers that goes on all summer long. This year’s theme is “All Together Now” and the Hudson Area Library has ton of free community-centered events, giveaways, and activities planned for readers of all ages. Andes Manta perform the vibrant music of the Andes on more than 35 traditional instruments. Waterfront Wednesdays starts off with a drum circle at 5:30 p.m. and then Andes Manta performs in the gazebo at 7 p.m. The event is open to everyone. Alongside the performances the Hudson Sloop Club offers free boat rides, and fishing lessons for kids. Food and craft vendors.

Observe cultural food demonstrations led by locals sharing recipes brought to Hudson from around the world, and enjoy a taste! In July, Jabin Ahmed will show us how to make Bangladeshi Tomato Tenga (a simple soup like curry, using tomatoes and fish). Then, stay tuned for details about the August event, which will focus on a Haitian recipe. Location: In person, Hudson Area Library Community Room. The Saugerties Artists Studio Tour celebrates its 21st Anniversary -- On July 14, the Opening of a new exhibit featuring the works of Saugerties artists is at The Dutch Barn Art & Heritage Gallery. This group show offers a contemporary glimpse into the world of artistic expression, in contrast to its setting in a 1750’s reconstructed Dutch barn. You will see classical styles as well as contemporary, from realistic to abstract works of art. The barn gives artists an opportunity to “go big,” displaying large works on canvas, moderately sized sculptures, furniture and pottery. Not to be overlooked, well-lit museum panels will support 2-D and smaller 3-D work with selections in a wide range of media: painting, collage, mixed media, fiber art, print making and photography.

Preview of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, featuring a live folk rock music soundtrack. The show runs from July 15 to 30. A comedy for all ages, this play poses some of life’s greatest questions and is full of love, laughter, and some of Shakespeare’s most beautiful language. Susie Ibarra, Jake Landau, and the Rhythm In Nature Residency will hold a Community Listening Lab, followed by a community discussion. Participants will meet at PS21 at 9:30 a.m. and will walk as a group to the Stony Kill where Ibarra, Landau, and the Rhythm In Nature Residency attendees will offer insights and instruction into field recording practices and techniques, leading the community in making field recordings and listening to the surrounding environment, with a focus on water and bird song, using handheld Zoom Field Recorders, stereo microphones, directional microphones, and hydrophones. Community members are encouraged to bring their own headphones (cabled, not bluetooth). Opening reception. A show of paintings by Will Clark curated by Sam Sebren. John William Clark (1916 - 2012) began painting late in life at age 85, with no formal training he painted daily until his death at 96. As a young man, Clark studied and published poetry and writing, which later informed his practice as a painter. His paintings often explored the theme of old age. At age 94, Clark stated, "There is a definite connection between my paintings and my poems - they both reflect my 94 years on this planet and my constant striving to make sense of it all." The show is hung in a salon-style presentation of 54 works, showcasing the breadth and depth of this artist's uncategorizable poetic outpouring. Through August 13.

Composer/percussionist Susie Ibarra is joined by Tashi Dorji, Phyllis Chen, and area percussion groups in the premiere of the multi-ensemble version of “Four Meditations on Impermanence,” a meditation on forests conceived and developed in PS21’s landscape. Inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh’s quote, Ibarra presents four pieces focused on the sonic world of four elements – metal, skin, wood, and water, creating a percussive piece grounded in these natural elements—one that is impermanent, yet also able to adapt and grow. The concert highlights a full day of community-wide, multidisciplinary engagement with PS21’s varied natural topography. Part of Ibarra’s Rhythm in Nature residency, the day includes a participatory performance along the Stony Kill, a musical procession through the forest, sound mapping, and visual and movement projects, all free and open to all.
