Bobby Previte's Blueprints. Hudson valley composer Bobby Previte leads a conceptual performance, with webcasts at wgxc.org and wavefarm.org. Previte has invited some of his favorite musicians in the Hudson Valley and beyond for these inaugural concerts of his newest project, Blueprints. Starting from 1979 and going forward up to the present moment, Previte has ripped a fragment of nearly every piece of music he has written in the last 39 years and placed them all, divorced from their previous context, into one (very long) document. The ensemble will play, distort, improvise around, and sometimes ignore these fragments. Using hand signals, body movements, and the occasional odd glare, Previte conducts the musicians through the maze, taking a different path every night. Part performance, part open rehearsal, part hang out - where audience members as well as players will see the fragments projected on screen - Blueprints should be a wildly different experience each performance. There should be a live webstream at http://wgxc.org around 8:30 p.m. Click on "Listen Now" at top of the page, and scroll down to find the live webstream.

Do you appreciate folk art a la Grandma Moses? If the answer is "yes," you won't want to miss the paintings of Allen Foster. Foster has been professionally recreating Columbia County village scenes and individual historic homes for over half a century. As he nears his 90th birthday, some of Allen’s work is now on display through March 1 in the recently dedicated Meeting Room of the Kinderhook Memorial Library. Local residents throughout the county have generously loaned their paintings of Kinderhook scenes and Columbia County homes; works from Mr. Foster's private collection round out the show. Charles Busch returns to Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill for a preview of his new cabaret act just prior to its opening at Feinstein's/54 Below in NYC. Accompanied by long-time musical director Tom Judson, Busch unfolds an comic-yet-poignant tale of his early years in the city, striving to find a place for himself in show business and culminating in the opening of his off-off-Broadway smash hit “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom.”

The Ghent Playhouse kicks off the second-half of its 2018-2019 season with the family dramedy "Miracle on South Division Street." This heartwarming fictional story by Tom Dudzick was inspired by a real Buffalo, NY barber who claimed the Virgin Mary appeared to him and thus erected a 20-foot-tall statue in the neighborhood. The “Call of the Forest” film follows visionary scientist, conservationist and author, Diana Beresford-Kroeger, on her journey to the forests of the northern hemisphere. From the sacred sugi and cedar forests of Japan, the ancient Raheen Wood of Ireland, the walnut and redwood trees of America, to the great boreal forest of Canada, Beresford-Kroeger tells us stories behind the history and legacy of these ancient forests while also explaining the science of trees and the irreplaceable roles they play in protecting and feeding the planet. Refreshments will be served and a moderated discussion will follow. For more information call 518-794-3048. For directions: www.oldchathamquakers.org

This heartwarming fictional story by Tom Dudzick was inspired by a real Buffalo, NY barber who claimed the Virgin Mary appeared to him and thus erected a 20-foot-tall statue in the neighborhood. Rachael and Vilray perform the same sort of mid-20th century jazzy pop familiar to fans of Rachael’s jazzy, soulful pop outfit Lake Street Dive. Rachael Price and Vilray met at the New England Conservatory of Music in fall 2003 and became friends. Their sound recalls both the warmth of radio’s golden age and the intimacy of parlor concerts in a time before recordings.

Participants should specify their dominant hand at application.

[1] Soundmark: This is derived from the term landmark. A soundmark is a sound which is unique to an area. In his 1977 book, "The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World," R. Murray Schafer wrote, "Once a Soundmark has been identified, it deserves to be protected, for soundmarks make the acoustic life of a community unique." p. 10. ISBN 978-089281455-8.
WGXC's Radio for Open Ears Pledge Drive, will run Feb. 23 through Mar. 9, 2019. Through the Radio for Open Ears Pledge Drive, we seek to continue to build our base of monthly sustaining donors to WGXC. Growing a community of sustaining supporters is vital to the station’s longevity.

In the world of bluegrass and folk, where the collaborative possibilities are endless, what draws some musicians together in formal collaborations is hard to pinpoint. For Joe K. Walsh, Grant Gordy, and Danny Barnes, a newly formed bi-coastal trio, curiosity is the rule, and tunes are just a starting point. The trio is anchored by banjo player and singer/songwriter Danny Barnes, best known as the frontman of the Bad Livers, and for his collaborations with Dave Matthews and Bill Frisell, and as the 2015 winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. Gordy and Walsh come from a more jazz and swing influenced background, having first bonded over their mutual obsession with learning David Grisman solos.

Roots-music trio Ballroom Thieves plays a captivating mélange of acoustic styles, blending folk conventions with modern hymnals, classical textures, and Delta blues grit with rich harmonies. They describe themselves as “a rock band disguised as a folk band,” and indeed they occasionally go electric in a way that reminds a listener of White Stripes or Tarbox Ramblers.
Guitarist Martin Earley, percussionist Devin Mauch, and cellist Calin Peters share lead vocals among them, adding harmonies to their original compositions. The band has shared the stage with bands like the Lone Bellow, Houndmouth, and fellow New Englanders Dispatch over the last couple of years.
