Literacy Connections of the Hudson Valley is seeking volunteers to conduct an English as Another Language drop-in class for adult speakers of other languages. No previous teaching experience or foreign language background is necessary. New volunteers are required to attend a free orientation session and complete the online training modules, which can be adapted to fit most schedules. Environmental sound installation at EMPAC, RPI, Troy. The Isle Is Full of Noises is an environmental sound installation composed by Michael Century, RPI professor of new media and music, with the assistance of Eric Miller, Ph.D. student in electronic arts. Century’s installation employs Wave Field Synthesis speaker arrays to spatialize an 8-channel sound composition. “The Isle Is Full of Noises,” is taken from Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. The characters of Caliban and Miranda are foregrounded against the auditory backdrop of an imaginary tropical island. Visitors will hear poetic text, phonemic particles of language, birds, animals, and occasional snippets of melody. “Caliban can be taken as the figure of the indigenous people of the ‘New World,’ a slave to an imperious foreigner with magical powers Caliban’s speech, which begins, ‘Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,’ articulates with great beauty the abundance of sonic life on the island.

Weekly classes will resume on Tuesdays with two levels: Advanced Beginner (5:30-6:30pm) for students of Spanish who have taken at least an introductory course in the language, and Intermediate (6:45-7:45pm) for those conversational in Spanish and who wish to further develop their skills. There will be a celebration of the students’ work at the conclusion of the series for both levels on December 4 from 5:30-7pm. Adults and high school students are welcome.

Musicians Arone Dyer, Brian Dewan, Ross Goldstein, Alexander Turnquist, and Liam Singer take an ambient/freeform musical journey inspired by the collective ingestion of Kava, a drink we have come to know and love. What is Kava, you ask? It's a plant-based beverage originating in the Pacific islands with natural sedative, anesthetic and euphoriant properties that is quickly gaining popularity in the west as a delightful alternative to alcohol. Audience members who wish to participate in Kava consumption should arrive at 7:30 p.m. We like a concoction that pairs Kava with Oat milk, cinnamon, and honey, but can accommodate other preparations upon request. The music will begin a little past 8 p.m. Chairs will be set out, as well as a small area of blankets/pillows if anyone wishes to lie down. Al Margolis and Max Hamel are two semi-local noise performers. Henry Birdsey is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and recording engineer from Vermont, working primarily with microtonal organ, lap steel, violin, and homemade instruments. Jen Kutler is a sound-based performer and sculptor. She modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments.

Choreographer Adam H. Weinert’s "Rip the Nut" is a pantomime-style, Hudson Valley-inspired mash-up of the Rip Van Winkle story and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite. Dancers Logan Kruger, Brett Perry, Davon Rainey, and Emma Sandall join Weinert and a host of community partners organized by Operation Unite NY for three performances.

Drop Forge & Tool is celebrating Hudson Winter Walk with our 2nd annual Kindling; a devised performance created by a group of creator/performers adept at making something from nothing. The group arrives on Thursday evening and will spend just 36 hours creating a new performance inspired by this year's theme: “gifting.” They will then share what they’ve made with the Winter Walk public on Saturday evening at 442 Warren Street. Performers: Barbra Berlovitz, Michael Hoch, Lisa Kitchens, Paul Kite, Amii LeGendre, Francis Magai, Mariana Newhard, and Micah Thomas. Accessibility Note: Performance will involve going up and down stairs.

Wayne Horvitz is a composer, pianist, and electronic musician who has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. He is the leader of the Gravitas Quartet, Sweeter Than the Day, Zony Mash, The Four plus One Ensemble and co-founder of the New York Composers Orchestra. He has performed and collaborated with Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, John Zorn, George Lewis, Robin Holcomb, Fred Frith, Julian Priester, Michael Shrieve and Carla Bley, among others. Commissioners include the NEA, Meet the Composer, Kronos String Quartet, Seattle Chamber Players, BAM, and Earshot Jazz. Collaborators include Paul Taylor, Liz Lerman, Bill Irwin and Gus Van Sant. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including two MAP grants and the NEA American Masterpiece award. Recent compositions include The Heartsong of Charging Elk based on the novel by James Welch and 55: Music and Dance in Concrete: a site-specific collaboration with dancer Yukio Suzuki and video artist Yohei Saito. He is the music programmer for The Royal Room, a performance venue in Seattle, Washington, and a professor of composition at the Cornish College of the Arts. Basilica Hudson closes its 2018 season with a celebration of the arrival of winter and an interactive musical procession of candles, humans and myths. The whole family is invited to take some quiet time out of the modern world, into the candlelit past. The event is open to all. Hot cider, tea and apple cider donuts will be available to purchase. Attendees should dress warmly for this reframing and recreation of the ritual as a celebration of the natural environment as the season changes.

Produced in partnership with Harpooned Productions, Winter Spiral will be a large-scale installation and multidisciplinary performance featuring music, movement, sculpture and ritual and drawing on ancient traditions.
