The Millay Colony for the Arts is now accepting 2014 residency applications. Each year the colony invites 52 visual artists, writers and composers for a colony residency. Residents are chosen anonymously by a panel of jurors in each discipline. The application process is competitive and based on the merit of the artist statement and work sample. Sam Pratt is a writer, designer, and environmental activist who led the nearly seven-year fight against St. Lawrence Cement. He’s written for some two dozen national publications, most recently The New York Observer. He covers local matters for Rural Intelligence and at his own site, http://www.sampratt.com
Michael Singer was News Director at KCBS Los Angeles, where he won a Peabody Award for investigative reporting. He was a CBS Network News Producer and he made documentaries for NBC and MSNBC. He was a freelance journalist, published in New York Magazine and The Village Voice, among others. He worked as an analyst for Medley Global Advisors, a private financial and political research company. Retired, he is now finishing a novel.

At noon, electronic literature featuring local physician Illya Szilak reading from "Tiny Drops," her tragic-comedy multimedia novel focused on a Japanese housewife kidnapped by North Korean frogmen, plus Paul La Farge from his hypertext "Luminous Airplanes." At 1:45 p.m., poet Cara Benson presents her upcoming "Funny. Considering how heated it was," and Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya offers excerpts from “The Watch,” the classic tragedy "Antigone" placed in embattled Afghanistan. Legendary bassist and bandleader William Parker, who was to launch the Monday night jazz series at the new venue, Quinn's, will now instead perform solo at the Beacon venue Dogwood. Quinn's continues to run into challenges as its ongoing renovations to prepare its ultimate grand re-opening -- as a result, Dogwood has graciously offered to open on a Monday night when they would usually be closed in order to present Parker in this rare Hudson Valley solo appearance.
