Come celebrate the arrival of the New Farmer Narrative Project exhibit at the Germantown Library with a talk by one of the Project creators, followed by a Q&A with area new farmers and light local refreshments.
The talk will feature highlights and findings from the Project, delving into the unique journeys, challenges, innovations, current situations, and future goals of people starting new farms in the larger Germantown area. The New Farmer Q&A offers a unique mid-season opportunity to converse directly with new farmers about these topics, including farmers from Fog and Thistle Farm, Sparrowbush Farm, Darlin' Doe Farm, the Tousey Winery, Great Song Farm, and Hearty Roots Farm, among others.
The New Farmer Narrative Project exhibit is a photo- and story-based display based on interviews and farm tours conducted by the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program, and will be at the Germantown Library from July 3rd to July 14th.

An evening of experimental music featuring Valerie Kuehne, the "electrically-charged virtuoso of all-purpose cello," from New York City performs a musical collage for cello and voice of dark and comedic vignettes, about shopping, food, and drugs. For more information, dreamzoo.bandcamp.com; Joey Molinaro, New York City-based composer, violinist, and fiddler, first gained attention as a member of the seven-piece experimental chamber-grind outfit “Basilica.” As an acoustic or electric solo artist, he conjures a torrent of riffs over a two-boot foot percussion flurry. For more information, www.joeymolinaro.com; Century Plants are the Albany-based experimental guitar duo of Eric Hardiman and Ray Hare, described as “part raging metallic clang by way of the holy Shred, part meditative feed-backing in total Zen style.” Century Plants have released music on labels from all over the globe. For more information, www.myspace.com/centuryplants; soundBarn has been mining the possibilities of extreme guitar for years. Thomas Lail and Patrick Weklar ply prepared and altered guitars, over-process signals and pile loops of sound to orchestrate an arching instrumental tale of creation and destruction. Frank Giorgini's 23rd Annual three-day Udu Drum Workshop, July 7, 8, and 14 The udu drum is an all-clay musical instrument indigenous to West Africa. Giorgini is an artist, designer, teacher, author and master drum maker living in Greene County, New York. In the summer of 1974, he had the opportunity to live and work with a group of African artists at the Haystacks Mountain School of Arts and Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. As a result of this unique cultural exchange, he learned the little known art of making the all clay side-hole pot drum from Abbas Ahuwan of Zaria, Nigeria. Giorgini is considered the designer of the modern Udu Drum and through his efforts the sound of the Udu Drum has affected contemporary music on a global scale. Udu. At this workshop you will explore the concepts and techniques underlying the construction and decoration of Nigerian pottery, while experiencing the actual forming of pots and drums by traditional hand building methods. No previous clay experience required. More information and photos at www.udu.com , or call 518-634-2559

The Howling Kettles and Evan Cory Levine will help celebrate the release of Head Womb's first album. "Somewhere in the pastel-hued melancholic wasteland between Nick Drake and Wes Anderson, Nick Perry's songwriting finds its place. To hear Head Womb is to be returned to the bedrooms of adolescence, the overambitious bookshelves and crushes, and to feel that all beauty maybe acutely unattainable."
The Howling Kettles (formerly known as STRING BAND) perform raw, hearty takes on the Old Time/Country canon. Based in Vermont, Sam Moss and Jackson Emmer lend another wild branch to this vast tradition. Expect fiddles, banjos, and the rugged tones of jubilation. The Howling Kettles have opened for David Lindley, The Devil Makes Three, and Bill Kirchen, to name a few. Their work has been featured on No Depression, DyingForBadMusic, and Ammuse. http://www.thehowlingkettles.com/about Evan Cory Levine

Annual week-long event in East Durham, and surrounding towns of Acra, Cairo, Leeds, and Greenville. Musicians from all over the world descend on Greene County. On opening night of the East Durham Irish Arts Festival, "Irish Show" host Tony Fallon is live in Acra at Wave Farm, and he'll have guests, musicians from around these parts, and visiting from Ireland, sitting in on the show. The Irish Arts Festival is part musicial workshops to keep the Irish music tradition alive; and late-night jam sessions to keep it strong.
