Jennifer Waits in radiosurvivor.com reports The California Historical Radio Society is archiving a treasure trove of materials related to radio history on its YouTube channel. "Included are some “Living History Series” interviews with radio luminaries like Carter B. Smith, Terry McGovern, Rosie Allen, Ben Fong-Torres and Stan Burford. Additional videos chronicle various events from Radio Day by the Bay (held at the historic KRE building in Berkeley) as well as a brief tour of some electronic artifacts (including radio equipment, vacuum tubes, and espionage tools) housed in the Perham Foundation’s collection, and a demonstration of the restoration of a 1930s transmitter."

Theatrical works by radio artist Anna Friz, are featured, including a new work from her residency in Iceland.

Curator and writer Manuel Cirauqui's Symposium is a monthly program about lectures and other related modes of critical discourse, presented with a strong focus on contemporary art and critique. The program uses radio as a creative device for mediation, reproduction, re-contextualization, and commentary. Presented in two parts, Hearing Hearings focuses on German poet, playwright, theatre director, and Marxist, Bertolt Brecht's hearings and Eric Bentley.

Tom Waits (on Robert Wilson): "Wilson, he's always playing with time. I heard a recording recently of crickets slowed way down. It sounds like a choir, it sounds like angel music. Something sparkling, celestial with full harmony and bass parts - you wouldn't believe it. It's like a sweeping chorus of heaven, and it's just slowed down, they didn't manipulate the tape at all. So I think when Wilson slows people down, it gives you a chance to watch them moving through space. And there's something to be said for slowing down the world."

With just a skeleton crew since the government "shutdown" Oct. 1, the Federal Communications Commission currently has no enforcement division, to react to complaints about pirate radio. Those complaints may be logged later, but the pirates may be long gone by the time the government re-opens for business. So, with America in a lawless state on the airwaves, is anyone monitoring pirate activity? The FCC keeps the records of pirate radio activity that anyone reporting about pirate radio inevitably refers to in their story. Pirates no longer like to leave internet traces, but there are a few websites with information about illicit activity on the airwaves. "PiratesWeek," a weekly audio report about shortwave and FM pirate radio activity comes from upstate New York's Ragnar Daneskjold, although he posts much less often every fall. Even when he doesn't post the weekly show that airs on many FM, shortwave, and internet stations, he does post audio files of pirate stations, and his Twitter feed is full of broadcast alerts. Pirate Radio Central (blackcatsystems.com/radio/pirate.html) also hosts a lively message board with information about shortwave pirates, numbers stations, utility stations, and more. Free Radio Cafe also has a lively forum, and includes solar weather and a way to upload QSL cards.

Jonah Parzen-Johnson is a baritone saxophonist living in Brooklyn, NY. His techniques including circular breathing, multi-phonics, and vocalization owes a debt to his Chicago hometown's sound. Parzen-Johnson is also a member of the afrobeat ensemble, Zongo Junction. Loud & Sad is a collaboration between Joe Houpert and Nathan McLaughlin, currently based out of Philadelphia, PA and Hudson, NY. Both individually in their solo work, and together in this duo, Houpert and McLaughlin explore the vocabulary of the reel-to-reel tape machine as a partner in accompaniment. They have built up this tape machine vocabulary through various phases of their work, utilizing a variety of instrument sources and trying to ground those in social concepts and ideas. The current focus is adding folk instrumentation to that vocabulary, with renewed emphasis being put into the energy of live performance. They have a number of releases that chronicle their various incarnations on labels such as cae-sur-a, FET Press, Digitalis, Greenup Industries and an upcoming release on Tranquility Tapes. You can also hear their work as part of the trio Tilth, with Cody Yantis.

Rhizome is an arts organization that works with artists engaging technology. Their programs include commissions, exhibitions, events, discussion, archives, and portfolios. Rhizome began in 1996 by artist Mark Tribe as an email list subscribed to by some of the first artists to work online and is now a thriving nonprofit, part of the New Museum in New York City. Heather Corcoran is now executive director, and during a visit to Wave Farm Oct. 10, 2010, she discussed the organization's past, present, and future.

Recorded live from ISSUE in June 2013, percussionist Eli Keszler and saxophonist Ashley Paul perform a duo as part of the PAN_ACT festival. Keszler's bowed crotales and cymbals resonate within Paul's altissimo sustains and drastic pitch bends. The split tone combinations from these instruments is surprising and overwhelming, creating continuously shifting, multi-layered harmonics and intense inner ear sound. Ashley Paul returns to ISSUE October 26th 2013, performing solo as part of Ten Years Alive on the Infinite Plain. Eli Keszler is a composer, artist and multi-instrumentalist based in New York City. In performance, he often plays drums, bowed crotales, and guitar in conjunction with his installations. In his ensemble compositions, he uses extended strings, motors, crotales, horns, and mechanical devices to create his sound, balancing intense harmonic formations with acoustic sustain, fast jarring rhythm, mechanical propulsion, dense textures, and detailed visual presentations. He has collaborated with Christian Wolff, Oren Ambarchi, Phill Niblock, Roscoe Mitchell, Tony Conrad, Joe McPhee, Loren Connors, Geoff Mullen, Jandek, and many others, and has recorded more than a dozen CDs and LPs for PAN, ESP-DISK and his own REL. Ashley Paul is a performer and composer based in Brooklyn, New York. She uses an array of instruments including saxophone, clarinet, voice, guitar, bells, and percussion, mixing disparate elements to create a colorful palette of sound that works its way into her intuitive songs; free forming, introverted melodies. This blend manifests beautiful and simple musical forms against acoustic experimentation. Paul has performed or recorded with Phill Niblock, Loren Connors, Aki Onda, C. Spencer Yeh, Anthony Coleman, Joe Maneri, Joe Morris, Seijiro Murayama, Greg Kelley, and Bill Nace appearing on such labels as PAN, ESP-DISK’ and Tzadik.

Tim Foljahn is a Midland, Michigan-born singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. After playing in the Kalamazoo hardcore scene in the late 1980’s (in noise bands such as the Spastic Rhythm Tarts with Midland pal, Steve Shelley) he relocated to Hoboken, New Jersey (via stints in Chicago, New Orleans, and Albuquerque) and formed Two Dollar Guitar in 1992. With Shelley on drums and a revolving cast of band and tour mates, including Dave Motamed, Janet Wygal, Tim Prudhomme, Keith Nealy, Luc Suer, Christina Rosenvinge, Jeremy Wilms, Smokey Hormel and Come’s Chris Brokaw, the group released six albums on Shelley’s Smells Like Records label. The debut album, "Let Me Bring You Down" (1994), a heavy collection of dark brooding ballads, established Foljahn as a twisted classicist in the vein of Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, and Lee Hazlewood. This mood was pushed further in 1996’s follow-up release, Burned and Buried, recorded at Easley Studios in Memphis. 1998 brought two experimental studies: the instrumental Train Songs, an improvisational meditation on Americana and travel, and the solo Hotel Opera, an intimate collection of lo-fi bedroom recordings released under the moniker La Lengua Asesina. 1999’s fan favorite, Weak Beats and Lame-ass Rhymes, was a moody pop flirtation, with echoes of Brigitte Fontaine and Areski, Astrud Gilberto, and Buffalo Springfield. The final Two Dollar Guitar album, The Wear and Tear of Fear: A Lover’s Discourse (2006), a solo, mostly acoustic affair, was mixed by Television’s Fred Smith, and marked Foljahn’s return to dark troubadour terrain.
