From Wikipedia: "Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was best known as one of the only bebop jazz musicians who successfully pioneered the funk and soul genres while simultaneously remaining a jazz artist.... While still at the Manhattan School, he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, as replacement for Clifford Brown.... After leaving the Jazz Messengers in 1956, he performed with many leading jazz musicians of the day, including John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and later Herbie Hancock. Byrd's first regular group was a quintet that he co-led from 1958-61 with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, an ensemble whose hard-driving performances are captured "live" on At the Half Note Cafe. In June 1964, Byrd jammed with multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy in Paris just two weeks before Dolphy's death from insulin shock. In the 1970s, Byrd moved away from the hard-bop jazz idiom and began to record jazz fusion and rhythm and blues. He teamed up with the Mizell Brothers (producer-writers Larry and Fonce) for "Black Byrd" (1973). The Mizell brothers' follow-up albums for Byrd, Street Lady, Places and Spaces and Stepping into Tomorrow, were also big sellers, and have subsequently provided a rich source of samples for acid jazz artists such as Us3.... During his tenure at North Carolina Central University during the 1980s, he formed a group which included students from the college called,Donald Byrd & the 125th St NYC Band.... He taught at Rutgers University, the Hampton Institute, New York University, Howard University, Queens College, Oberlin College, Cornell University, North Carolina Central University and Delaware State University. In addition to his master's from Manhattan School of Music, Byrd had two master's degrees from Columbia University. He received a law degree in 1976, and his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College in 1982. Byrd lived in Teaneck, New Jersey until his death on February 4, 2013 at the age of 80."

"From the Vault" of Pacifica Radio Archives, a 1987 interview with jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd. This recording is one of perhaps two dozen from a mid-1980's series called "Night Journey," produced by James Graves, in which an outstanding roster of musicians, artists, and filmmakers were featured by virtue of their positive role within the Black community. Subjects of Night Journey included the likes of pianist Ahmad Jamal, drummer Al McKibbon, director Spike Lee, and this "From the Vault"'s featured voice, Donald Byrd. While Byrd certainly made his mark playing with many of the 1950's jazz legends, what truly set him apart were the innovative soul and funk sounds he incorporated into his work during the 1970's.

In early February, 2013, a Montana television station was overtaken by some sort of pirate signal, that triggered an Emergency Alert System announcement of a zombie attack. The station released this statement: "Someone apparently hacked into the Emergency Alert System and announced on KRTV and the CW that "dead bodies are rising from their graves" in several Montana counties. This message did not originate from KRTV, and there is no emergency. Our engineers are investigating to determine what happened and if it affected other media outlets." Days later, reports of other on-air intrusions began to spread, with four reports so far. This show will also tune in the nation's first pirate television station, Lanesville TV, in Greene County, NY in the early 1970s from the Videofreex. Plus, the infamous "Max Headroom" pirate television broadcasts in Chicago in the 1980s, and Captain Midnight busting into HBO then. The piece was written to address the sad truth that many common, household and automobile air-fresheners are heavily carcinogenic. The fact that people are willing to put their lives in danger in order to preserve nothing more than the aesthetic qualities of their world typifies the form over function attitude prevalent in our society and is something which we felt was important to deal with. The work is in three sections, (1) Breathe In(side) by Brian Dillon, (2) Form by Gregory Jackson and (3) A Comparison of Worth by Bernhardt McKenna. "Radia" is a network of 20 stations in 13 countries, including free103point9/WGXC, each interested in new and forgotten ways of making radio. "Saturday Afternoon Show" rebroadcast from Oct. 27, 2012 with Baltimore-based artist Jason Sloan, and his project "Whiteout," a new series of live FM transmission performances exploring and questioning the aesthetic of noise on the radio. These new textural works are created live and in the moment through the use of multiple analog electronic instruments and a transmitter.

Writes Sloan, "I was about twelve when I first became aware of how beautiful radio noise could be. I recall laying in bed and listening to my portable shortwave radio, slowly turning the dial, but allowing for long pauses on the dead spaces, as I moved from one distant broadcast to another. At times, I think I was more interested in the sounds produced by the odd interference and signal modulation than the broadcasts themselves. I would often drift to sleep listening to the ghost like voices buried beneath layers of slow and undulating static. At that age, I didn’t think much about what attracted me to the noise. I just enjoyed its sometimes violent yet mysterious and relaxing qualities. Looking back on those late night listening sessions in the early 80′s, I’ve come to realize the impact they had on my own development as a sound artist and electronic musician. The seeds for my awareness of the radio as an expressive medium were probably planted during this years. Of course, I was totally unaware that artists like Neuhaus, Stockhausen, Vostell, Cage and others had already begun exploring the possibilities of the radio as an art form decades earlier.

With this in mind, two years ago I began to include live scanner feeds in my concerts and performances. Unlike shortwave radio, scanners pull from air traffic, police, ham and other types of local broadcasts within just a few miles of the listener. The idea of incorporating live, local transmissions into the performance as a sonic fingerprint of the local geography was appealing to me. I saw it as an aural snapshot of that very moment or even an invisible, stringed instrument of sorts.

Recently, I was in my car listening to the SPK debut album Information Overload Unit from 1981. About halfway through the albums opening track Emanation Machine R. Gie 1916, I became aware of how much it sounded like some of the textures and modulating frequencies I would listen on the shortwave for hours as a kid. I began to wonder if a musical performance of pure analog electronic “noise” was broadcast on the radio, how would a listener moving through the dial know what they were hearing was an actual broadcast? And if they did, how where they able to discern synthetic, controlled noise from pure generative noise? It is my hope that the whiteout series of performances brings the very essence of noise, music and even our own environmental sonic awareness into question."

U.S. Attorny General Eric Holder sent a letter to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) saying the President can take out Americans with radio-controlled drones. "The U.S. Attorney General's refusal to rule out the possibility of drone strikes on American citizens and on American soil is more than frightening," Paul told Mother Jones Tue., March 5. "It is an affront the constitutional due process rights of all Americans."

Paul received a letter from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder saying the president could kill Americans with radio-controlled drones on U.S. soil. “I rise today to begin to filibuster John Brennan’s nomination for the C.I.A.,” Mr. Paul began. “I will speak until I can no longer speak. I will speak as long as it takes, until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important, that your rights to trial by jury are precious, that no American should be killed by a drone on American soil without first being charged with a crime, without first being found to be guilty by a court.” Live coverage at midnight until it ends.

Charles Gayle (born February 28, 1939)[1] is a free jazz saxophonist, pianist, bass clarinetist, bassist, and percussionist, who sometimes performs as a mime, "Streets the Clown." Gayle was born in Buffalo, New York. He was apparently homeless for approximately twenty years, playing saxophone on street corners and subway platforms around New York City. In 1988, he gained fame through a trio of albums recorded by a Swedish label, Silkheart Records. Since then he has become a major figure in free jazz, recording for labels including Black Saint, Knitting Factory Records, FMP, and Clean Feed. He has also taught music at Bennington College. Since the Eighties, Al Margolis has run the indie cassette label Sound of Pig Music. His own music has succeeded in fusing ambience with industrial and musique concrete, producing strange soundscapes that are both soothing and unnerving, often at the same time. In the Nineties, Margolis evolved the Sound of Pig label into Pogus Productions, replacing the cassette medium with compact disk technology.

Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star the Columbia County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on a proposed mobile phone tax, Wed., Mar. 13. According to county officials, a plan to tax all county property owners 30 cents per month is under consideration, but details are still unknown. The funds will support the operations of Columbia County 911. The current plan represents a compromise reached after some supervisors objected to taxing every owner of a mobile device countywide. President Franklin Roosevelt gives first radio Fireside Chat, about the banking crisis, March 12, 1933, and this show rolls that tape. From Wikipedia: "Roosevelt first used what would become known as "fireside chats" in 1929 as Governor of New York. Roosevelt faced a conservative Republican legislature, so during each legislative session, he would occasionally address the citizens of New York directly. In a New York History Quaterly article on the fireside chats' origin, Geoffrey Storm notes that while a WGY radio "address of April 3, 1929 was FDR's third gubernatorial radio address, historian Frank Freidel asserts that this was the first fireside chat." In these speeches, Roosevelt appealed to radio listeners for help getting his agenda passed. Letters would pour in following each of these "chats," which helped pressure legislators to pass measures Roosevelt had proposed. He began making the informal addresses as president on March 12, 1933, during the Great Depression."

Victoria Estok has a dual background in sound art and environmental work. Before pursuing sound, she was an environmental worker in both urban and backcountry settings. It was during this time that she became aware of a deep seated need to uncover the intentions behind everyday actions. Her work highlights listening as a practice often exposing emotional undercurrents. Alternating between taking a playful look at what we consider to be reality and then sometimes a more poetic approach, Estok lingers on sounds and words capturing listeners and having them reexamine what they are paying attention to.

Steve Lambert made international news after the 2008 US election with The New York Times “Special Edition,” a replica of the “paper of record” announcing the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and other good news. In the Summer of 2011 he began a national tour of Capitalism Works For Me! True/False – a 9 x 20ft sign allowing people to vote on whether capitalism worked for them . He has collaborated with groups from the Yes Men to the Graffiti Research Lab and Greenpeace. He is also the founder of the Center for Artistic Activism, the Anti-Advertising Agency, Add-Art (a Firefox add-on that replaces online advertising with art) and SelfControl (which blocks grownups from distracting websites so they can get work done). Steve’s projects and art works have won awards from Prix Ars Electronica, Rhizome/The New Museum, the Creative Work Fund, Adbusters Media Foundation, the California Arts Council, and others. Lambert’s work has been shown everywhere from museums to protest marches nationally and internationally, featured in over fourteen books, four documentary films, and is in the collections of The Sheldon Museum, the Progressive Insurance Company, and The Library of Congress. Lambert has discussed his work live on NPR, the BBC, and CNN, and been reported on internationally in outlets including Associated Press, the New York Times, the Guardian, Harper’s Magazine, The Believer, Good, Dwell, ARTnews, Punk Planet, and Newsweek.

Since the Eighties, Al Margolis has run the indie cassette label Sound of Pig Music. His own music has succeeded in fusing ambience with industrial and musique concrete, producing strange soundscapes that are both soothing and unnerving, often at the same time. In the Nineties, Margolis evolved the Sound of Pig label into Pogus Productions, replacing the cassette medium with compact disk technology.
