Legendary free jazz saxophonist David S. Ware died Thu., Oct. 18. We will play some of his most amazing moments. There is a memorial for him Jan. 7, 2013 in Manhattan.

From Wikipedia:

"Ware's recorded debut was in 1971, on a privately-produced LP recorded by Abdul Hannah, an alto saxophonist from Boston. He went on to record with drummer Andrew Cyrille and pianist Cecil Taylor. In the late 1970s and early '80s Ware recorded more regularly as a bandleader, and formed his acclaimed quartet in the early 1990s. The quartet was originally composed of Ware, pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker and drummer Marc Edwards. The drum chair was later occupied by Whit Dickey, Susie Ibarra, and Guillermo E. Brown. The quartet released a string of well-reviewed albums mostly on small record labels, but saxophonist Branford Marsalis signed Ware to two-album deal with Columbia Records in the late '90s.[2] Ware dissolved the quartet in about 2007, after the release of the album Renunciation. He has since recorded albums for solo saxophone, and with several different supporting bands. Suffering from kidney disease, Ware was able to undergo a successful kidney transplantation at the age of 60, after receiving a kidney donated in response to an email message sent out to nearly 1,000 of Ware's fans." He was 62.

Art's Birthday: An annual exchange-art event celebrated on January 17 by a loose collection of artists and artist organizations around the world. "Art's Birthday" is an annual event first proposed in 1963 by French artist Robert Filliou. He suggested that 1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. But one day, on the 17th of January to be precise, Art was born. According to Filliou, it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. Artists have celebrated Art's Birthday with lavish parties and gatherings, correspondence and mailart, and through Telematic networks using SloScan TV, Videophones, music composed for telephone lines, modem-to-modem MIDI connections, early bulletin board and chat systems, and (starting in the mid 1990's) the Internet. free103point9: transmission arts and WGXC 90.7-FM will broadcast several of these events Jan. 17-Jan. 20. Tune in around the world with us at artsbirthday.net.

Radia Show 407: "Out Come The Wolves" by La Danse de l’Ours from Radio Grenouille in Marseille, France. "Out Come the Wolves" is the second sound piece of Nicolas Perret and Cédric Anglaret’s project The four seasons of Paanjärvi in which, since 2009, they focus on the soundscape of the small russian village of Paanajärvi. Isolated in the thick primary forest of oriental Karelia, Paanajärvi has somehow fallen out of the time. Its inhabitants, the last custodians of the disappearing Karelian culture, live a tough life that is strongly bond to the nature surrounding them. Winters are harsh in Paanajärvi. At this latitude, the sun doesn’t show much and temperatures remain way below freezing for many months. As winter progresses food gets rare for the wolves. Out of the forest they approach the village at night to attack dogs, that the villagers try to protect by all means. As long as dogs are barking the wolves are still far; once they are silent they are nearby. In the winter of 2012, 23 dogs were eaten by the wolves in Paanajärvi. Following "Out come the wolves," a 6 minutes addition sheds light on the Man who eats dogs. The four seasons of Paanjärvi is supported by SCAM, Défi Jeune, the Juminkeko Foundation and Radio Grenouille. In 2007 Nicolas Perret and Cédric Anglaret have joined their practice of sound, documentary and music in a common project of collection, creation and diffusion. Since they work under the name La danse de l’ours. www.ladansedelours.blogspot.com "Out come the wolves" – winter, Recorded in March 2012 in Paanajärvi, Duration: 23 min, Mix: Philippe Chario. Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris (February 10, 1947 - January 29, 2013) was an American jazz cornetist, composer and conductor. From Wikipedia: "Morris was born in Long Beach, California. Before beginning his musical career, he served in the US forces in the Vietnam War. Morris came to attention with saxophonist David Murray's groups in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Morris's brother, double bassist Wilber Morris, sometimes performed and recorded with Murray during this period. Morris led a group called Orchestra SLANG. The group features Drummer Kenny Wollesen, alto saxophonist Jonathon Haffner, trumpeter Kirk Knuffke and others. He performed and presented regularly as part of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, held annually in New York City. He also played with well-known artist and would be drummer A.R. Penck in 1990. Morris is the originator of Conduction (a term knowingly borrowed from physics): a type of structured free improvisation where Morris directs and conducts an improvising ensemble with a series of hand and baton gestures. These conductions have received generally positive reviews, and are often considered quite unique, not quite fitting into any one musical genre: critic Thom Jurek has written, "There are no records like Butch Morris' conduction sides, nor could there be, though he wishes there were."[1] and Ed Hazell writes, "At his best, Morris can shake players out of their old habits, or place a microscope on one aspect of a musician's artistry and build an orchestral fantasia around it." Morris died of lung cancer on January 29, 2013 at the age of 65."

This edition of framework:afield has been produced in Vancouver, Washington, in the United States, by John F. Barber. Ambient Pulsations explores a universe of pulsating sounds, all without apparent physical sources or attributes of materiality. This inability to visualize sound sources promotes an acousmatic listening experience focused on the act of hearing. As a result, we take interest in sounds for their own merits, refining our listening through repeated listening, thus becoming more aware of our listening variations and subjectivity. This work imagines itself a narrative, but, what does it sound like to you? Two episodes of "Radio, Radio" from Ubuweb. First, Jane Draycott & Elizabeth James have been collaborating on radio poetry projects for several years. Their work has been heard on the BBC and on stations and networks around the world. Draycott's latest collection Tideway (Two Rivers Press) is a collaboration with artist Peter Hay. A sound montage made during the writing of the book features in the Summer 2002 issue of Boomerang UK. James's poetry has been published by Vennel Press, Form Books and Writers Forum (the latest being Recognition, 1999). Her other collaborative projects include: Neither the One Nor the Other with Frances Presley and 'Two Renga' with Peter Manson. Then, John Oswald's 1989 CD Plunderphonics spawned a new category of music which samples not just pop songs, but their cultural contexts as well. Since then Oswald has refined his "electroquoting" on the CDs Greyfolded, Electrax, Discosphere, Plexure and the recently released Plunderphonics box set. In his Radio Radio program he talks about the legal machinations that have surrounded his work and plays a range of examples.

"Radius Sketchpad" is an ongoing monthly program on WGXC 90.7-FM presented by the Chicago-based platform, Radius. This month features Klaus Filip / Nicolaj Kirisits / et al.'s Cultural Morphing, originally produced for Radius, and is followed by a playlist of works selected by the artist. "Cultural Morphing" is an experiment in creating a multi-perspective image of reality from the simultaneous experience of a geographic line by the individual expression of a perceived personal reality. Twelve invited artists traveled by train from Vienna to Shanghai, and selected stops along the route served as their workspace where they would meticulously work out an project that outlined various aspects of cultural transition experienced on the journey. Stopovers at Ulan-Ude, Ulan Bator, Beijing and Shanghai were used to exhibit the works that were created en route. China emerged as the focus and destination for "Cultural Morphing" because of the mutual, cooperative, and also oppositional status of digital art between China and Europe. Europe and China are two antipodes in cultural history that have been in steady interchange, but have also developed differently and independently from each other. This cultural deviation is the starting point and the ultimate potential of our project. Adequate to the technology of morphing, the realization of the individual artworks will be a consummation of the artistic interpretations of many keyframes on the tracks between Vienna and Shanghai. The broadcast for Radius will feature a score developed through filming a dinner at a Chinese rotating table. The images captured through filming from above the table during the course of the dinner were sonified with data and acoustic recordings collected along the journey. The artists involved created individual sound files based on a video score that were later combined into one stereo track.

Tune in the jazz, the collaborations, the hip hop samples, of trumpeter Donald Byrd. Byrd died Feb. 4. From Wikipedia: "Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was best known as one of the only bebop jazz musicians who successfully pioneered the funk and soul genres while simultaneously remaining a jazz artist.... While still at the Manhattan School, he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, as replacement for Clifford Brown.... After leaving the Jazz Messengers in 1956, he performed with many leading jazz musicians of the day, including John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and later Herbie Hancock. Byrd's first regular group was a quintet that he co-led from 1958-61 with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, an ensemble whose hard-driving performances are captured "live" on At the Half Note Cafe. In June 1964, Byrd jammed with multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy in Paris just two weeks before Dolphy's death from insulin shock. In the 1970s, Byrd moved away from the hard-bop jazz idiom and began to record jazz fusion and rhythm and blues. He teamed up with the Mizell Brothers (producer-writers Larry and Fonce) for "Black Byrd" (1973). The Mizell brothers' follow-up albums for Byrd, Street Lady, Places and Spaces and Stepping into Tomorrow, were also big sellers, and have subsequently provided a rich source of samples for acid jazz artists such as Us3.... During his tenure at North Carolina Central University during the 1980s, he formed a group which included students from the college called,Donald Byrd & the 125th St NYC Band.... He taught at Rutgers University, the Hampton Institute, New York University, Howard University, Queens College, Oberlin College, Cornell University, North Carolina Central University and Delaware State University. In addition to his master's from Manhattan School of Music, Byrd had two master's degrees from Columbia University. He received a law degree in 1976, and his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College in 1982. Byrd lived in Teaneck, New Jersey until his death on February 4, 2013 at the age of 80."

"From the Vault" of Pacifica Radio Archives, a 1987 interview with jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd. This recording is one of perhaps two dozen from a mid-1980's series called "Night Journey," produced by James Graves, in which an outstanding roster of musicians, artists, and filmmakers were featured by virtue of their positive role within the Black community. Subjects of Night Journey included the likes of pianist Ahmad Jamal, drummer Al McKibbon, director Spike Lee, and this "From the Vault"'s featured voice, Donald Byrd. While Byrd certainly made his mark playing with many of the 1950's jazz legends, what truly set him apart were the innovative soul and funk sounds he incorporated into his work during the 1970's.

As radio continues to evolve in the digital age, it remains the medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide. This multi-purpose medium can help people, including youth, to engage in discussions on topics that affect them. It can save lives during natural or human-made disasters; and it provides journalists with a platform to report facts and tell their stories.

Radia Show 409: Dogs and Architecture by Ergo Phizmiz and the Radio Anywhere Ambassadors for Soundart Radio. Radia is an international network of radio stations interested in creative and forgotten ways of making radio. Each week, one station makes a radio art show to air on all the others. This week: Why Dogs? It’s great to have an intelligent animal around. Maybe it’s time for human beings to take a step back. Why Architecture? Now more and more people are recognising the contribution dogs have made to architecture. Join us in a celebration of doggy design and canine construction. Why Ergo Phizmiz? Thanks for coming to lead a workshop on our Radio Anywhere project. And bringing along a rare photo of an architect dog. From that it was a short step for the Radio Anywhere Ambassadors to find a dog genius to interview, recordings from the dog relaxation spa, extensive reviews of building design, sounds of disgruntled cats, songs about dog builders, statements from pro-human-architect campaign groups and a machine that translates dogs thoughts. Why Radio Anywhere? Radio Anywhere Ambassadors meet to talk about radio ideas, produce work together, and to broadcast from their homes, streets, neighbourhoods, towns and planet with Soundart Radio’s little-studio-in-a-box. As they do this they will inspire more radio makers they meet along the way, as part of our station’s redefinition as a network of small connected studios. Noises and voices by Robert Davidson, David Harbott, Lona Kozik, Danielle Rose, Ariane Delaunois, Alice Armstrong, Remi Romeder, Chris Mockridge and Jenny Wellwood. Assembled by Ergo Phizmiz and Lucinda Guy.
