"Nam June Paik: Global Visionary" opens Dec. 13 at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. This show will tune in some of the Korean artists sound and video works. From the Smithsonian: "The artwork and ideas of the Korean-born artist Nam June Paik were a major influence on late twentieth-century art and continue to inspire a new generation of artists. "Nam June Paik: Global" Visionary offers an unprecedented view into the artist’s creative method by featuring key artworks that convey Paik’s extraordinary accomplishments as a major international artist as well as material drawn from the Nam June Paik Archive, which was acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum from the artist’s estate in 2009. "Don’t panic," a live performance by Chris Farmer in the Panik studio from Radio Panik (Brussels, Belgium) via the Radia network. "Radia" is a group of radio station seeking new and forgotten ways to make radio. Each week one station makes a show to share with all the others, including WGXC/free103point9. This show was a live perfomance by Chris Farmer in the Radio Panik studio, based on a previous work he did a few months ago for a german galery (Expo Berlin). The work he did in Berlin resulted in an improvised performance which was an electronic, harmonic and visual echo of the surrounding urban space. In Brussels, Chris farmer proposed to the Radio Panik listeners to recreate the poetic and harmonic experience of that particular urban landscape, which he recorded and translated with his sound recorder and coloured pencils. Living and working in Brussels, Belgium, Chris Famer is of vaguely British origin and a self-taught gardener, linguist, musician and artist who composes and improvises in all of these media. Since the early 1990s, he has gardened, translated and created his way through France, Belgium and the UK. His quest is to find poetry in noise and the botany of language, hoping to one day compile a formally chaotic and above all subjective monograph of the world that confronts him, and us, every day. Since an early age, Chris Farmer has been influenced, or obsessed, by song and sound, and especially how it can be transformed or dismantled, as seen in the works of Anthony Milton, Michael Gira, Richard Skelton. He currently experiments with the relation between languages, culture, sound, structure, horticulture and art, in various random combinations.

The first major snow storm of the winter in the Northeast United States is greeted with a special hour of live coverage, news updates, live snow sounds, and more. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for the WGXC listening area, with 5-9″ of snow expected early Thursday morning. The snow likely begins after 5 p.m. Wednesday, possibly heavy at times Thursday morning, and turning to sleet and freezing rain Thursday. Some snow showers could linger Thursday evening. Rebroadcast. SnowFlow, a three-day collaboration Feb. 11-13 2011, at the Full Moon Resort in the heart of the Catskill Forest Preserve, brought together artists, activists, farmers, biologists, and organizations from all over NY and PA to raise awareness over the threats to our most vital natural resource - clean water. Informal conferencing took place at meals made from locally farmed food and with skiers at nearby Belleayre mountain. There was snowshoeing, snow shelter building, and a special, pure water inspired concert curated by Suzanne Thorpe of EMF and ISSUE Project Room.

All these records were visual, touchables. This program collects ten moments of human history which reflects the importance of sound and elements that reinforce its communication power. A survey of new releases on the anniversary of the 100th year since John Cage's birth.

Selections from free103point9's "120 Hours of John Cage," presented Sept., 2012 with artists such as Gregory Whitehead, Damian Catera, Andrea-Jane Cornell, and others.

This is the legendary 1978 samizdat recording of "Audience," starring Václav Havel (1936-2011) as Vanek and Pavel Landovský as Sládek. It was recorded by folk singer Vladimír Merta in his Prague appartment in 1978 and published by the Šafrán label, ran from Upsalla, Sweden, by Czech exiles Jirí Pallas and Jaroslav Hutka, both signatories of the Charter 77. The LP was unofficially circulated in Czechoslovakia and many Czechs knew parts of the play by heart after 1978, despite the fact any Havel publication was banned in the country since the 1968 Soviet invasion. Havel himself was briefly imprisoned in 1978 and continuously from June 1979 to January 1984. This is a rare example of a record which proved dangerous for its authors, as well as for the entire Soviet system. Czech record company Bonton officially published the recording for the first time in 1990, soon after Havel became president of Czechoslovakia in December 1989. Václav Havel and Pavel Landovský in "Audience" (as it is titled in Czech) belongs to a trilogy of partly autobiographical one-act plays also known as the Vanek Trilogy, comprising Audience (1975), Protest (1978) and Mistake (1983), based on Havel’s experience of being forced to work in a brewery and under constant harassment from the Communist regime. Taking place in the brewery’s office, Audience is a meeting between the brewery’s manager Sládek and employee Vanek. While the manager is clearly opening too many beers and inducing into binge drinking, it is less clear what he wants from Vanek, though it ultimately transpires he has a deal to offer: a promotion agaisnt informations on Vanek’s political activities.

Legendary free jazz saxophonist David S. Ware died Thu., Oct. 18. We will play some of his most amazing moments. There is a memorial for him Jan. 7, 2013 in Manhattan.

"Ware's recorded debut was in 1971, on a privately-produced LP recorded by Abdul Hannah, an alto saxophonist from Boston. He went on to record with drummer Andrew Cyrille and pianist Cecil Taylor. In the late 1970s and early '80s Ware recorded more regularly as a bandleader, and formed his acclaimed quartet in the early 1990s. The quartet was originally composed of Ware, pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker and drummer Marc Edwards. The drum chair was later occupied by Whit Dickey, Susie Ibarra, and Guillermo E. Brown. The quartet released a string of well-reviewed albums mostly on small record labels, but saxophonist Branford Marsalis signed Ware to two-album deal with Columbia Records in the late '90s.[2] Ware dissolved the quartet in about 2007, after the release of the album Renunciation. He has since recorded albums for solo saxophone, and with several different supporting bands. Suffering from kidney disease, Ware was able to undergo a successful kidney transplantation at the age of 60, after receiving a kidney donated in response to an email message sent out to nearly 1,000 of Ware's fans." He was 62.

Following 2012′s reissue of “The Disintegration Loops,” now Auris Apothecary has reissued William Basinski’s debut album, “Shortwavemusic.” The record was recorded in New York in 1982, and first released by Raster-Noton in 1998. For the 30th anniversary of “Shortwavemusic” the label created a reel-to-reel version of the project for a Jan. 1 release. They’ve also made the music free and streamable online, and this show will tune it in. The Dombass Symphony" (1930) by Dziga Vertov, a symphony of abstract industrial noise for which a specially designed giant mobile recording system was constructed (it weighed over a ton) in order to capture the din of mines, furnaces and factories. Then: "In 1966, then General Manager for KPFK Los Angeles 90.7fm Paul V. Dallas decided to turn to the 24 hour fundraising Marathon technique to raise money for the stations operating expenses. Here is a 5 minute clip from September 13 1966 of a young Pre-Firesign Theatre Peter Bergman and Paul Robbins as they hosted phone calls in their own unique counter-culture way during KPFK's first Marathon fundrive. In the second clip then General Manager Paul V. Dallas speaks to the audience about the program Radio Free Oz after it's first 8 weeks on the air. KPFK was hit with a barrage of letters in support and against this Free Form Radio experiment hosted by Peter Bergman and Paul Robbins. Also included in this show is Dymaxion's "Chase Scene/Transistor Radio," John Ashberry's "Rivers and Mountains" from 1963, and Venus Flytrap from "WKRP in Cincinatti" explaining the atom."

Joel Chadabe, composer, author, is an internationally recognized pioneer in the development of interactive music systems. He has concertized widely since 1969. As president of Intelligent Music from 1983-1994, he was responsible for the development and publication of a wide range of innovative and historically important software, including M and Max. As author, his book 'Electric Sound: The Past and Promise of Electronic Music', published by Prentice Hall in November 1996, was the first comprehensive overview of the history of electronic music. His articles on electronic music have appeared in respected journals and publications internationally. Chadabe is currently Professor Emeritus at State University of New York at Albany; Visiting Faculty at New York University; and Founder and President of Electronic Music Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that organizes concerts and other events and disseminates information and materials relating to the history and current practice of electronic music.

Following 2012′s reissue of “The Disintegration Loops,” now Auris Apothecary has reissued William Basinski’s debut album, “Shortwavemusic.” The record was recorded in New York in 1982, and first released by Raster-Noton in 1998. For the 30th anniversary of “Shortwavemusic” the label created a reel-to-reel version of the project for a Jan. 1 release. They’ve also made the music free and streamable online, and this show will tune it in. Plus, Myke Dodge Weiskopf curates "ShortWaveMusic," traveling abroad and recording shortwave radio and turning it in to beautiful collages, which will be heard here. In 1971, former Iranian dictator Muhammad Reza Shah hosted a lavish and highly choreographed event amidst the ruins of the ancient Persian capital of Persepolis in order to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of Iran's founding by Cyrus The Great. "Out Come the Wolves" is the second sound piece of Nicolas Perret and Cédric Anglaret’s project The four seasons of Paanjärvi in which, since 2009, they focus on the soundscape of the small russian village of Paanajärvi. Isolated in the thick primary forest of oriental Karelia, Paanajärvi has somehow fallen out of the time. Its inhabitants, the last custodians of the disappearing Karelian culture, live a tough life that is strongly bond to the nature surrounding them. Winters are harsh in Paanajärvi. At this latitude, the sun doesn’t show much and temperatures remain way below freezing for many months. As winter progresses food gets rare for the wolves. Out of the forest they approach the village at night to attack dogs, that the villagers try to protect by all means. As long as dogs are barking the wolves are still far; once they are silent they are nearby. In the winter of 2012, 23 dogs were eaten by the wolves in Paanajärvi. Following "Out come the wolves," a 6 minutes addition sheds light on the Man who eats dogs. The four seasons of Paanjärvi is supported by SCAM, Défi Jeune, the Juminkeko Foundation and Radio Grenouille. 'Off The Hook' radio program from WBAI in New York, with internet activist Aaron Swartz a guest a few months ago before his recent suicide. This show features an excerpt of that, along with part of an interview with Swartz at age 14 that underlines what a remarkable person he was. A co-founder of West Berlin's Zodiak Free Arts Lab, he was an early member of Tangerine Dream (1969–1970) and a founder of the band Kluster. The Magnetic Fields (named after the André Breton novel "Les Champs Magnétiques") is an American indie pop group founded and led by Stephin Merritt. He is the group's primary songwriter, producer and vocalist, as well as frequent multi-instrumentalist. This show will feature some of their songs.

Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris (February 10, 1947 - January 29, 2013) was an American jazz cornetist, composer and conductor. From Wikipedia: "Morris was born in Long Beach, California. Before beginning his musical career, he served in the US forces in the Vietnam War. Morris came to attention with saxophonist David Murray's groups in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Morris's brother, double bassist Wilber Morris, sometimes performed and recorded with Murray during this period. Morris led a group called Orchestra SLANG. The group features Drummer Kenny Wollesen, alto saxophonist Jonathon Haffner, trumpeter Kirk Knuffke and others. He performed and presented regularly as part of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, held annually in New York City. He also played with well-known artist and would be drummer A.R. Penck in 1990. Morris is the originator of Conduction (a term knowingly borrowed from physics): a type of structured free improvisation where Morris directs and conducts an improvising ensemble with a series of hand and baton gestures. Two episodes of "Radio, Radio" from Ubuweb. First, Jane Draycott & Elizabeth James have been collaborating on radio poetry projects for several years. Their work has been heard on the BBC and on stations and networks around the world. Draycott's latest collection Tideway (Two Rivers Press) is a collaboration with artist Peter Hay. A sound montage made during the writing of the book features in the Summer 2002 issue of Boomerang UK. James's poetry has been published by Vennel Press, Form Books and Writers Forum (the latest being Recognition, 1999). Her other collaborative projects include: Neither the One Nor the Other with Frances Presley and 'Two Renga' with Peter Manson. Then, John Oswald's 1989 CD Plunderphonics spawned a new category of music which samples not just pop songs, but their cultural contexts as well. Since then Oswald has refined his "electroquoting" on the CDs Greyfolded, Electrax, Discosphere, Plexure and the recently released Plunderphonics box set. In his Radio Radio program he talks about the legal machinations that have surrounded his work and plays a range of examples.

"Radius Sketchpad" is an ongoing monthly program on WGXC 90.7-FM presented by the Chicago-based platform, Radius. This month features Klaus Filip / Nicolaj Kirisits / et al.'s Cultural Morphing, originally produced for Radius, and is followed by a playlist of works selected by the artist. "Cultural Morphing" is an experiment in creating a multi-perspective image of reality from the simultaneous experience of a geographic line by the individual expression of a perceived personal reality. Twelve invited artists traveled by train from Vienna to Shanghai, and selected stops along the route served as their workspace where they would meticulously work out an project that outlined various aspects of cultural transition experienced on the journey. Stopovers at Ulan-Ude, Ulan Bator, Beijing and Shanghai were used to exhibit the works that were created en route. China emerged as the focus and destination for "Cultural Morphing" because of the mutual, cooperative, and also oppositional status of digital art between China and Europe. Europe and China are two antipodes in cultural history that have been in steady interchange, but have also developed differently and independently from each other. This cultural deviation is the starting point and the ultimate potential of our project. Adequate to the technology of morphing, the realization of the individual artworks will be a consummation of the artistic interpretations of many keyframes on the tracks between Vienna and Shanghai. The broadcast for Radius will feature a score developed through filming a dinner at a Chinese rotating table. The images captured through filming from above the table during the course of the dinner were sonified with data and acoustic recordings collected along the journey. The artists involved created individual sound files based on a video score that were later combined into one stereo track.
