The Daily Freeman is reporting Riverkeeper is calling on New York state leaders to “reinvest in clear water.” The environmental protection group Mon., Jun. 29, issued its annual report, which found water quality has improved dramatically since the passage of the state’s Pure Waters Bond Act 50 years ago. However, the group said, water quality improvements are needed in areas used by the public for recreation, particularly in tributaries and cities. Riverkeeper said that as measured against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended guidelines for safe swimming: 23 percent of Hudson River estuary samples failed; 72 percent of Hudson River tributary samples failed; and, 48 percent of New York City-area water access point samples failed. Dan Shapley, Riverkeeper’s Water Quality Program manager, said in a prepared statement the group is challenging state elected officials to reinvest in the clean water infrastructure and in the enforcement of environmental laws.
