Amanda Purcell reports for Columbia-Greene Media the property taxes are going up in Hudson, as Mayor Rick Rector April 26, for a second time, vetoed Common Council legislation to throw out the much larger assessments from GAR Associates. The Common Council voted to reject the preliminary assessment roll 8-3, a veto-proof majority, but does not have time to vote before the new assessments take effect May 1. “The state has delegated exclusive authority to the assessor to assess real property and prepare the assessment roll,” Rector wrote. “Thus, neither the Common Council nor the mayor have jurisdiction over the assessment process and have no legal authority to set the assessment roll.” Many citizens complaining about the large increases in the assessments of property value have threatened lawsuits to overturn the decisions.
