Cuomo raises penalty on texting-while-driving

Joseph Spector in Politics on the Hudson reports that infractions for texting while driving increase from three points to five points on a person’s license starting Sat., June 1, 2013. Gov. Andrew "Cuomo said the state needs to further crack down on texting-while-driving offenses as more drivers, particularly young people, are distracted when they drive because they are using mobile devices," Spector writes. In 2011, texting while driving was boosted from a two point penalty, to three, and was changed to a primary offense, allowing police to pull over texters for that reason. About 30,000 tickets were handed out in the state in 2012 for the offense. Read the full story in Politics on the Hudson.
