HCSD reopening plan a work in progress
Aug 17, 2020 1:15 pm
Jeanette Wolfberg is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Hudson school district is working out the details of its reopening plan as it braces for the start of the 2020-21 school year, seeking guidance from parents and guardians, asking whether they want their children to receive instruction 100 percent online or to attend in person if and when possible. The school also wants to know if students will be driven to school or rely on bus transportation. The information is needed to allocate classroom space and to create school day schedules. Superintendent Maria L. Suttmeier is also asking that when families commit to a lesson model and transportation mode they commit to it for an entire semester. The superintendent is also talking about setting aside the four days after Labor Day for professional development and teacher instruction on how to work with students better online. Under the current plan, classes will begin the week of September 14. As for the reopening, Suttmeier said health and safety are priorities, but noted, “We need a curriculum so that students are prepared for the next grade.” She emphasized that the reopening plan is a “work in progress” that looks at September. “We don’t know how October will look,” she said. Students will be required to wear masks and there will be temperature screening, perhaps on the school bus. The district is still working on how art and music instruction and science lab work will take place. The Hudson Board of Education will next meet 6:30 p.m., Tue., Aug. 18, by livestream.
