NY relies on federal health insurance option

Dan Goldberg and Brendan Cheney are reporting at Capital New York data released Tue., Jul. 28, indicated nearly half of all New Yorkers rely on a federal program for their health insurance. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released the latest Medicare enrollee numbers for each state in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the program. There are 3.3 million New Yorkers enrolled in Medicare, coming in fourth nationwide behind California, Florida and Texas. About 6.3 million New Yorkers are enrolled in Medicaid, according to the state health department, the second most in the nation. The population of New York is approximately 19.7 million.
