Jessica Mosier is reporting in The Daily Mail members of the Durham community came out Tues., Jan. 21, to voice concerns to the town board over allegations plans are underway to close the former Durham Elementary School building. Talk of the closure has been circulating since a released Dec. 2013 report was posted on Facebook. The document included reports from various school personnel, including Superintendent Mary Fassett, building principals and the transportation department. Town Supervisor William A. Carr said Tuesday said that while the town board has no jurisdiction over the building's fate, there is an element of overlap between the Town Board and the Board of Education on this issue. Carr said any decision to re-purpose or close the school will have a significant impact on the town, including a negative effect on property values. Carr suggested those concerned find out what action the school board is actually considering. He said, "...I have to believe they are conscientious people,...and I have to believe they have the kids best intentions [in mind]." The Cairo-Durham Board of Education meets 7 p.m., Thurs., Jan. 23.
