EarthSpeaker was conceived as an installation of multiple units of an outdoor sonic sculpture. The first prototype of EarthSpeakerwas built in 2006 at Eyebeam Center labs. The following year, Fedderson permanently installed the project at Wave Farm (Acra, NY.) Each unit was a large, solar-powered, electro-acoustic speaker, which absorbed sunlight during the day and emits low frequency sounds at dusk.

In 2012, the electronic components of EarthSpeaker were permanently retired. The five cochlear-like sculpture elements remain in the landscape as artifacts of the original installation.
