New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will wage a U.S. Senate floor fight to restore food stamp funding, as debate begins this week on the Farm Bill, several sources reported Tue., June 5. Willie Vogt at Farm Futures reports Gillibrand's office says the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the proposed food stamp losses would result in an average benefit cut of $90 per month, or 32 percent for a half-million households. Instead, Gillibrand will present an amendment with the $4.5 billion in cuts restored by reducing federal subsidies for crop insurance companies "who already make huge profits every year," she says.
