Featuring two hours of Algerian Raï (“opinion”), the folk music genre that dates back to the 1920s but emerged in the 1980s as an important pop genre, reflecting the changing society of post-independence Algeria. Influenced by Egyptian classical, Spanish flamenco, French cabaret, Bedouin gharbi and indigenous Gnawa music, and later by rock, reggae, salsa, hip-hop and more, Raï continues to be a vital expression of North African identity among immigrant communities around the world. Music for the Masses invites you on an excursion of sound and rhythm. Discover the music of established and emerging artists, both signed and unsigned, on the international music scene. Expect the unexpected. You might want to pack a map and a sandwich. For the avid globe-hopper and armchair traveler alike. Broadcast live from the Carnegie Room of the Catskill Library. Hosted by Neva Wartell.
