Music for the Masses: Make Mine on Raï (Audio)
Jul 18, 2017
Hosted by Neva E. Wartell.
Featuring two hours of Algerian Raï (“opinion”), the folk music genre that dates back to the 1920s but emerged in the 1980s as an important pop genre, reflecting the changing society of post-independence Algeria. Influenced by Egyptian classical, Spanish flamenco, French cabaret, Bedouin gharbi and indigenous Gnawa music, and later by rock, reggae, salsa, hip-hop and more, Raï continues to be a vital expression of North African identity among immigrant communities around the world.
