Greene Co. lawmakers appeal to state for 'fair share'

Apr 18, 2013 6:41 am
Ariel Zangla reports in the Daily Freeman the full Greene County Legislature adopted a resolution Wed., Apr. 17, calling on the state to allocate 911 surcharge funds to counties to support emergency and public safety communications. The resolution said the state imposes a $1.20 public safety surcharge on all wireless telephones, which was intended to be spent on 911 operations. Instead, the state has diverted fund proceeds for many years. County Administrator Shaun Groden called the state’s diversion of the funds unconstitutional. Lawmakers are calling on the state to allocate more of the funds back to counties through a grant program. Greene County already imposes a 30-cent local surcharge on cellular phones.
