GOP in surprise fight to hold state Senate

Thomas Kaplan reports in The New York Times New York Democrats said early Wed, Nov. 7, the party is poised to take control of the state Senate following the election of several Democrats in critical legislative races, Tuesday. Republicans have not conceded defeat, and Albany watchers said it could be days before either party is able to assert control, because the Democratic caucus will include five members who have not ruled out backing Republican leadership of the chamber. Republicans currently hold 33 of 62 Senate seats. The chamber will expand to 63 seats January 1, as part of the redistricting plan drawn up by the GOP. Read the full story in The New York Times.
