This broadcast features a re-broadcast of a 2012 show hosted by Rend Smith and produced by Nick Szuberla and Andrew Parsons. Listeners take a journey in search of prison poetry and prisoner poets in New York, visiting institutions like Riker’s Island and Attica, to discover poetry as transformation. According to the Correctional Association of New York, about 54 percent of those incarcerated at Mount McGregor in Saratoga County are serving time for violent offenses. Working at Mount McGregor, poet Cara Benson opens a session of the poetry workshop by asking a group of all male prisoners to write a feminist poem. Plus announcements about upcoming events in Greene and Columbia counties, including details on a fundraiser for the Victory Bus Project, which provides fresh organic produce and transportation for urban families whose loved ones are incarcerated in upstate prisons, and Beyond the Bars, the show currently on exhibit at the Greene County Council on the Arts Catskill Gallery through November 7th. Produced by Alexandra Cox.
