Advocates push for passage of 'Erin's Law'

Mar 19, 2019 1:00 pm
Rick Karlin is reporting for the Times Union a group of activists and lawmakers March 18, urged the passage of a bill that would mandate that K-8 schools spend at least one hour a year teaching students the difference between “good touch” and “bad touch” to empower them to recognize sexual abuse. "This bill will stop predators," said Gary Greenberg, the Capital Region abuse survivor who helped push through the Child Victim’s Act earlier this year. The bill, dubbed Erin’s Law, previously passed in the state Senate but never received a full hearing in the Assembly. The measure might not be considered this session until after the state budget is completed on April 1. Assembly members want to craft an omnibus education bill that would contain a number of items they would like to see taught or covered in schools, such as drug awareness or other safety issues, said Stephen Carpineta, communications director for the New York Progressive Action Network. Erin's Law has been adopted in 35 other states. Read the full story in the Times Union.
