Eco*Technofeminisms from the Global South: Perspectives on Water as a Technological Interface and Ancestral Connection (artist talk) with Dr Nicol Rivera, in conversation with Ayesha Hameed (Brown Atlantis Radio)

An artist talk by Dr. Nicol Rivera, technofeminist artist, researcher, and curator at Insola Berlin, followed by food and conversation. Nicol will be joined in conversation with Ayesha Hameed.

Through this chill and interesting talk, Dr Nicol Rivera proposes to understand water as a technological, ancestral, and political interface connecting bodies, territories, memories, and temporalities.

Drawing from her research in performative practices around the body, sound, and pleasure, Rivera proposes a posthuman feminist approach to water that moves beyond its understanding as a natural resource or passive material. Instead, water is approached as a first analogue technology and interface: a conductive and mutable medium capable of carrying information, transmitting memory, and mediating relationships between human and more-than-human bodies.

"Taking as an example the technofeminist curatorial program Future Fluids (2022), I propose a bridge between gender as a liquid phenomenon and technology as a repeat and important theme for eco-technofeminism, Indigenous feminisms, eco-hydrofeminisms, and speculative feminist practices. These perspectives are linked to the Global South, and with particular attention to Mapuche territories across present-day Chile and Argentina, the conversation questions the colonial and capitalist separation between nature and culture, body and territory, past and future."

Water becomes a point of departure for thinking about the body itself as a fluid technological system: permeable, relational, mutable, and constantly exchanging matter and information with its surroundings. In this sense, fluidity becomes not only a material condition but also a political and poetic strategy for disrupting normative understandings of the body, identity, and technology.

The contextualization of this theoretical frame will help to put in context the lecture performance RECLAIMING THE PLEASURE OF THE INTERGALACTIC MERMAID, part of the performance evening on Saturday 5th September. As a piece that is trying to generate a bridge between contemporary DIY technological practices with ancestor technologies and believes from the south of Chile and the ancient mythology of those waters. The performance extends these questions into the body, sound, pleasure, and speculative embodiment, imagining the mermaid as a posthuman figure that moves between ancestral memory and intergalactic futures, between aquatic matter and technological transformation.

Lecture Performance from the conference “Time to Listen. Multispecies Creativity in Music and Sound.”

The conference is jointly organised by inm / field notes and the Academy of Arts Berlin, in collaboration with Musikfonds e.V. and Impuls neue Musik.

Radio Otherwise set up multiple microphones, hydrophones, antennas and receivers on the Insola floating platform at Rummelsburg Bay in Berlin, and transmited these signals live to the Academy of the Arts, blending listening to these inputs and infrastructures with reflections on previous durational transmission works that brought together parallels between waterways and electromagnetic transmission as infrastructures of flow—in terms of more-than-human agency, human access to and infiltration of these systems, as well as leakages and disturbances.

Radio Otherwise (Monaí de Paula Antunes, Kate Donovan, Niko de Paula Lefort) is an ongoing artistic research project that explores the plurality of experiences in radio-making through ecological thinking.

The Order of Anura by Jol Thoms

Anuras' (Frogs/Toads/Salamanders) are the vertebrates hardest hit by climate devastation. This hour-long program of other than human sacred music and history is in response and dedicated to those most endangered by extinction: the amphibians. We resonante our ritual recordings into the Spree re-activating it as a planetary scale amplifier for our shared cross-species messages of urgency, care and concern. The Order of Anura attune and develop new sensibilities to the imperatives and sympoetics of beyond-the-human worlds and our mutual embeddedness, as global health plummets with direct ties to the loss of so many species of amphibian.

The Well of Mothers by Margarida Mendes

Merging the hidden waters of underground Lisbon — with its sunken rivers and wells of fortune — with the meandering flows of the Spree, this cross-watery broadcast interweaves spatial dimensions and sonic thresholds to establish new liquid horizons. Resonating from a well deep inside Earth’s trenches, it invites the breath of aether to travel across physical space and conduct its own vibratory magic, weaving thus a cartography of the senses.
