Radiophrenia Redux Show Image. (Jul 01, 2017)

Produced by Radiophrenia.

This month Radiophrenia works include "I Came to Crete to Die" by Steven Jones, "Nothing Here Now But – A Tribute to Eliane" by Isabelle Stragliati and "Location Series Number 1" by Alessandro Bosetti.

"I Came to Crete to Die" by Steven Jones. An audio collage documenting a road trip along the northern coast of Crete. At its foundation is a battle between driver and passenger for control of the car radio. It also includes recordings of a Greek unemployment benefit office, a Greek Orthodox church service, a travelling potato salesman, numerous musical performances and recordings of daily Cretan life.

"Nothing Here Now But – A Tribute to Eliane" by Isabelle Stragliati.

Eliane was Isabelle’s step-mother. Last year she died as a result of Alzheimers disease. In this piece she explores radio’s potential to evoke memory, disorientation and memory loss. Using tapes of Eliane’s favorite songs, shared memories, sounds and texts. Asking: In the end, is there anything to remember at all?

Featuring the voices of François Cau, Isabelle Hainaud-Griffiths, Eliane Ravanat, Gilbert Ravanat and Isabelle Stragliati.

"Location Series Number 1" by Alessandro Bosetti. In this piece Bosetti has recorded as many people as possible within a certain period of time. Wherever he went he asked people to say the word “here” in their own mother language. These single-word samples have been edited chronologically in the exact order in which they were recorded. The recordings were made between August and October 2017 in Italy, France Portugal and Taiwan.

In triangulating languages, individuals and the microphone we obtain precise coordinates of pure existence but we may not be able to infer proper locations. Nevertheless all these coordinates draw a path, a road, a corrugated and fascinating itinerary worthy of travelling over and over again with our ears and imagination. Consider this piece a travelogue, or a meditation on voice in relative space and have a nice trip.

This monthly program features highlights and commissions from Glasgow art radio station Radiophrenia.

Presented on an annual basis, Radiophrenia is a temporary art radio station – a two-week exploration into current trends in sound and transmission arts. Broadcasting live from Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts, the station promoted radio as an art form, encouraging challenging and radical new approaches to the medium. Each year, the broadcast schedule includes a series of newly commissioned radio works, live shows, pre-recorded features and 12 Live-to-Air performances. The majority of the program is made up from selections submitted to an international open call for sound art and radio works. Radiophrenia is managed by Mark Vernon and Barry Burns and is funded through Creative Scotland’s Open Project Funding with additional support from CCA Glasgow.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The artist has asked that the audio archive for this program not be made available online. Inquiries may be send to info@wavefarm.org.
