Gibson: Doing his best to bring people together

Ariel Zangla is reporting in the Daily Freeman U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson said he is doing his best to bring people together and find ways to make a difference through his legislative work and by addressing constituent needs. The Kinderhook Republican was interviewed at the Daily Freeman's office in Poughkeepsie, Tues., Aug. 19. Gibson is seeking his third two-year term serving the 19th Congressional District. His challenger is Democrat Sean Eldridge of Shokan. During the interview, the retired U.S. Army colonel spoke about a variety of issues including tax reform, the New York City watershed, immigration reform, Planned Parenthood and the federal Affordable Care Act. He said the campaign finance systems needs reform and expressed his belief in term limits. Gibson said he is ranked the second-most independent Republican in the House, voting with his party 74 to 75 percent of the time. On the issue of hydraulic fracturing, Gibson said he feels the federal government should impose baseline regulations on the practice to make sure the companies involved comply with the Safe Water Drinking Act and disclose the chemicals they use. He also supports New York state taking its time to research the issue and allowing communities to decide for themselves whether they want to allow the process.
