Bethany Bump is reporting at Capitol Confidential testing advocates and opt-out groups are convinced the state's opt-out movement will grown this spring, despite the changes to state tests being implemented this month. However, state Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia [EH-lee-uh] told the Times Union editorial board Mon., Apr. 4 that she's not hearing that from anyone as she tours the state. Elia has been traveling New York for approximately nine months, meeting with district superintendents, building principals, teachers, parents, students and advocates about the state’s Common Core program. She said Monday, “...I’ve met with the group that is leading the opt out, but I’ve met with a lot of parents and teachers too. I think the factors that we’ve shifted related to the assessments and related to the teacher evaluations — I think those are going to be key in having people rethink what they’ve done. So we’ll see.” Elia said the state implemented changes in response to the legitimate and consistent concerns she's heard since taking over last summer.
