Freshkill

2023
Maximilian Goldfarb

Freshkill will be an architectural sculpture and an instrument for sensitive environmental listening. The project engages a 1972 Gordon Matta-Clark performance film, “Fresh Kills.” The film depicts the destruction of Matta-Clark’s utility vehicle at the foot of the Fresh Kills landfill. In 2004, Goldfarb mirrors Matta-Clark's truck by acquiring a similar vehicle (designated as “Mobile 49” by the emergency services for which it had been used), which he applied to serial mobile, site-responsive projects carried out over several years. In 2010, the role of the Mobile 49 truck shifted from being the central element of Goldfarb’s artistic practice to a long term outdoor installation at Wave Farm, featuring a conversion of the truck’s internal workstation into a solar-powered radio studio housing Wave Farm’s 1620-AM. In 2023, Freshkill will be a new and culminating phase of the Mobile 49’s multi-decade trajectory, a significant reimagining and reconstruction.
