Public Radio

2007
Simon Elvins

Elvins writes:"Public Radio was a series of site specific installations in a number of public spaces across London. Each AM radio was built from found and secondhand components to create a radio from everyday materials in the simplest means possible. These radios were only complete and functional once they were installed in the public domain, latching onto the nearest pole, tree or lamppost to create the coils required to power and tune them. The earth connection literally plugging into the ground and the aerial attaching to the highest point of the structure. This early and basic design required no battery or mains supply as powered from the energy within the radio waves themselves.

This intended to offer people a quiet spot to listen to radio within a busy city and to reconsider the invisible environment that radio constantly occupies around us.

Exhibited at 'Deptford Design Market Challenge', Royal Festival Hall, London. This show was part of London Design Festival, and invited 27 international designers to redesign discarded objects from Deptford's thrift market.
