Stitching Together

2007
Kristina Lindström and Åsa Ståhl
The project stitching together takes shape, as its name suggests, in a communal sewing circle. Tied to the idea that some text messages are digital detritus worthy of saving or transforming into the physical, the stitching together sewing circle stitches onto cloth the content of text messages provided by members of the public. These stitched textual fragments are then quilted together to create a larger narrative. Over twenty stitching together events have taken place since 2007 in Norway, Sweden, Mexico, and the U.S. Lindström and Ståhl write: "Most of us have text messages in our mobile phones that we do not want to throw away. They are connected to places, situations, and people we love, hate, miss, and in any case have a relation to. In stitching together we invite you and other sms-users to share text messages and transform them into tangible and physical text messages made out of thread and fabric. We want to make it possible for you to make these intimate, digital treasures longer lasting and stitch together different techniques, different speeds, people of different ages, and different usage of communication channels."
