Voice of Doom

“The Machinery of Doom” is a sound art project by Joseph Brenner, a former DJ at KZSU Stanford, who went by the air name of “The Voice of Doom.” The project dates back to the mid-90s when Industrial music was an active feature of the Bay Area underground music scene: the original influences were projects such as Einstuerzende Neubatuen and many local groups such as Sharkbait, Scott Jenerik, Moe Staiano and Mandible Chatter – plus some earlier artists such as John Cage.

The world of industrial found object percussion often focused on angry and aggressive dance rhythms, but in contrast the Machinery of Doom works with atmospheric textures often including some layers of spoken word using that signature “Doom Voice,” always on the outer edge of anything that might usually be called music.
