Howard Broomfield
Howard Broomfield (1947-1986) was an anthropologist, recordist, and radio producer. As a member of the World Soundscape Project, an acoustic education and research group that composer R. Murray Schafer established at Simon Fraser University starting in the late 1960s, Broomfield contributed to the group’s field recording and sound production efforts under the deeply influential “acoustic ecology” approach that the group advanced. He also worked extensively with the Dane-zaa First Nations, collaborating on musical and environmental sound recordings that became a major part of his weekly show on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio.
