Gibson would turn away refugees

Nov 18, 2015 12:03 am
UPDATED (Nov. 18): Akum Norder in Capitol Confidential reports that Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) -- who increasingly looks like he is running for governor in 2018 -- is against bringing Syrian refugees to the United States. "The U.S. should immediately suspend its Syrian displaced person support program until we know more about what happened in Paris and until we can assure the safety and security of our people," Gibson said in a press release. Rep. Paul Tonko compared that position to the United States’ turning away European Jews fleeing the Holocaust in the 1930s. Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts said he would not let Syrian refugees into his state, even though governors do not have a hand in immigration policy people are allowed to move freely between states. On Nov. 17, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo refused to join Baker and more than two dozen governors who are rebuffing Syrian refugees. He said the security concerns are real, but those concerns are currently being politicized. Cuomo's comments came during a question-and-answer session with students at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Read the full story in Capitol Confidential.
