Comcast/Time Warner deal before PSC Thursday
Sep 27, 2014 12:04 am
The Public Service Commission (PSC) discusses several issues with cable provider Comcast, including its proposed merger with Time Warner Cable at its next regular meeting at 10:30 a.m., Thu., Oct. 2, in the 19th Floor Board Room of its offices located at Three Empire State Plaza, in Albany. The PSC will review, "Comcast’s Extension of the Review Period," "Joint Petition of Time Warner Cable, Inc. and Comcast Corporation for Approval of a Holding Company Level Transfer of Control," and "Joint Petition of Charter Communications, Inc. and Comcast Corporation for Approval of a Transfer of Control of Subsidiaries and Franchises." Bill Sanderson in Capital New York reported recently that, "Since Comcast announced plans to merge with Time Warner Cable, PSC members or their staff have had five non-public meetings with Comcast officials, records show. At least one of the meetings, Capital New York reported, also included a Cuomo administration official. What was said at the meetings isn't public record: The PSC responded to a FOIL request for records or notes of the meetings by saying there aren't any." “New Yorkers not only endure slower internet service than similar cities in other parts of the world, but they also pay higher prices for that substandard service,” New York City comptroller Scott Stringer says in comments filed to the commission. “Tokyo residents enjoy speeds that are eight times faster than New York City’s, for a lower price. And Hong Kong residents enjoy speeds that are 20 times faster, for the equivalent price.” The commission webcasts its meetings at: http://www.dps.ny.gov/Webcasts.html
