Athens Town Board suspends hunting proposal

Sep 18, 2013 7:47 am
Melanie Lekocevic is reporting in The Daily Mail the Athens Village Board has decided to table its discussion of a proposed change to the law that would allow hunting in restricted areas of the village. The hunting proposal was first made by local hunter John Cameron, who suggested it would help control deer overpopulation. The village still has a 1942 law on its books, which outlaws shooting and trapping in the village. However, that law is now believed to be invalid, because only the state Department of Environmental Conservation has the ability to restrict hunting. The village can, however, permit or restrict the use of a weapon within its jurisdiction. The trustees chose to temporarily table the matter over concerns about negative feedback from the community.
