Prison Voices Project: Follow up on PINS (Audio)
Apr 10, 2013
Hosted by Cory Fischer-Hoffman.
This program features local community efforts to reroute the school-to-prison pipeline by transforming the PINS (persons in need of supervision) program in the Hudson City School District; and a segment on the Good Friday Vigil that took Place at the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson to honor those whose lives have been touched by incarceration.
At the request of the school, children placed on PINS are rerouted away from the education system into the criminal justice system. Disciplinary infractions in school, which can include being late, talking back, or wearing clothes that fall outside of the dress code, result in having to face a judge and being at risk for incarceration. This second community meeting demonstrates an interest to find alternatives to the PINS program. The show features Judge Nichols of Columbia County, Superintendent Maria Suttmeier, Hudson High School Acting Principal Antonio W. Abitabile, Re-entry specialist Richard Smith, Quintin Cross and Cedrick Fulton of the Staley B. Keith Social Justice Center, Linda Mussman of Time and Space Limited and community members Selha Graham Cora and Alan Skerrett.
