Nothing Is Real Radio Hour: Ending Verizon, Part Two (Audio)

Jul 30, 2024

For this special edition of the "Nothing Is Real Radio Hour" host + creator Sam Sebren presents recordings of his last phone calls with Verizon agents, attempting to end his connections with the company which took many hours and calls over several years as well as trips to the Verizon store. Even after Sebren had his phone numbers ported to a new phone company, he was still receiving unexplainable bills from Verizon Wireless. Here in "Part Two" ("Part One" broadcast on April 30 and is in the Wave Farm archives) we hear how Sebren's last attempts to cut ties with the company finally played out. Perhaps listeners will relate to this dark comedy of corporate and technological dystopia, presented in this radio theatre of phone calls.

The "Nothing Is Real Radio Hour" includes sound and transmission arts works by Sebren, who is based in Athens, and occasionally works by other artists, both pre-recorded and performed live in the studio. In a multidisciplinary practice, much of Sebren's recent work has challenged notions of accepted reality in art, advertising, and public spaces. In mediums including sound, Sebren's work blurs actual, imagined, and technological realities as he critiques socio-political rules & regulations in our consumer "culture" and urges his audience to smile and re-think our priorities.
