Overlooked: 21 from 2021. From Rob Saffer. (Dec 28, 2021)

Hosted by Rob Saffer.

After the local news at noon, 21 new releases from 2021. In the past 11 months, host Rob Saffer played more than 600 tracks from more than 450 different musician composers, many "overlooked" by other radio stations. But an additional 600 to 700 records did not make the cut. Sixteen broadcasts featured newly released music and eight were thematic in focus. This final show of 2021 will feature 21 new releases, including a fair amount of trumpets both quiet and blaring; plenty of guitars, some ambient, some screeching; prepared piano; jazz from ensembles large and small, improvised and composed, minimal and maximal; genre-fluid choral rock, jazz and noise; sultry vocals; and, chilly, arctic sonic vistas. Plus, a few cuts from some of Saffer's favorites from 2021: William Parker’s “Mayan Space Station;” Blurry the Explorer; Kuunatic; and Arooj Aftab. Music by William Parker; Blurry the Explorer; Kuunatic; The Body and Big|Brave; Android Trio; Wadada Leo Smith Trio; Johnny Greenwood; Enrico Rava; Adam Rudolph Guitar Orchestra; SUSS; Now Ensemble; Duane Pitre; Sara Serpa and Emmanuel Iduma; James Ilgenfritz, Brian Chase and Robbie Lee; David Sanford Big Band; Ghost Rhythms; Satoko Fujii; Charlotte Greve; Emily D’Angelo; Arooj Aftab; and John Luther Adams.

“Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation.
