r a d i o q u a l i a (radioqualia)

r a d i o q u a l i a, a project of artists Adam Hyde and Honor Harger, created artworks that combined radio transmission and net art from 1998 through 2003. Both members hail from New Zealand but were based at times in Australia and in Europe, and the duo hosted a show airing "experimental approaches to net.radio, broadcast radio and radio art" on London's Resonance FM. They also produced infrastructures for these interwoven broadcast modes, including, centrally, The Frequency Clock: "a multi-platform system which enables users of the internet to timetable webcasting content for broadcast on the internet and on FM radio and television." Works by r a d i o q u a l i a often existed as some combination of radio broadcast, digital stream, gallery installation, and print publication elements. Embracing the internet's capacity to remove impediments to live collaboration across large geographic distances, the duo at the same time developed FM/AM/shortwave radio as vibrant material components in the broadcasting ecologies they brought about.
