Ken Lovett is reporting in the Daily News an effort to pressure state Republican Chairman Ed Cox to resign is underway. Eleven upstate county Republican chairs issued a letter Jan. 8, addressed to Cox urging him to resign, arguing the party is in serious need of restructuring and revitalization. The letter came from the chairs of Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schenectady, St. Lawrence, Warren and Washington counties. In addition to Cox, the letter was also sent to various GOP party leaders statewide. According to an unidentified source, other county chairs could join the effort in the coming days. Another GOP insider said they are hoping Cox’s exit can be agreed to peacefully. Cox's term runs through September and he has said he will seek reelection this year. Cox has served in that capacity since 2009. “I share the frustration with the disappointing election, but despite the results, we got the most votes cast—2.2 million—on the Republican (gubernatorial) line since 2002,” he wrote in a statement released to the paper.
