The Mental Health Association of Columbia Greene joins WGXC at the Catskill Studio for an open house for the community. Local mental health organizations will be present with information throughout the day, which will feature live broadcasts from Yeshi of "NORMLRadio" and Neva Wartell of "Music for the Masses".

Please be invited to an evening of collaborative and improvisatory radio making with Wave Farm Co-Directors Bianca Felix Biberaj and Meredith Kooi, alongside the Kinstillatory Fire on Thursday May 21st, 6-8pm, outside at Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side, Mannahatta, in Lenapehoking!

In small groups, we will create sound works for FM broadcast using microtransmitters. Our evening will culminate in a live group performance for radio.

"Breaking the Algorithm IRL" is a monthly series presented by Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM as part of our Local Waves initiative and the show "Local Waves in Conversation." Part conversation led by Mike Amari of Chosen Family and part DJ set by a WGXC volunteer, the series highlights local artists, musicians, venue owners and bookers, and record label owners.

Teresa Time explores the use of pirate radio as a method of resistance by examining minor acts of insurrection against government censorship. This work is based on the culture of pirate radio stations in the 1980s, when Taiwanese broadcasts were illicitly transmitted into China. At the center of this conflict was the beloved Taiwanese pop singer, Teresa Teng, whose voice became the symbol of these Broadcast Wars, enticing Chinese listeners to defect to Taiwan. As a result, the CCP, who maintained strict control of the incoming media, attempted to ban, jam, and disrupt the radio stations. Listeners in China resisted by adjusting the frequencies and recording live broadcasts onto tapes.

Using transmitters and archival materials (bootlegged Teresa Teng CDs, audio clips, and historical broadcasts) I reactivate this history at Wave Farm. Evoking James C. Scott’s concept of “peasant resistance,” listeners follow a set of instructions to locate the frequency of the broadcast, while it is disrupted by overlapping media and interference.

Camille Wong (they/she) is a research-based artist based in Los Angeles, CA. Their practice examines power, geopolitics, and historiography through the lens of media and spectacle. Working across video, sculpture, and writing, they explore how systems of power are embedded within cultural memory and social infrastructures. Often site-specific, their practice considers how we inherit our understanding of place and displacement. Their recent work focuses on media and rhetoric from the Cold War, exploring how these narratives shaped global ideologies and immigration patterns.

Their work has been shown at the Art, Design, & Architecture Museum at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has exhibited their work throughout Los Angeles including the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Monte Vista Projects, and Art Share LA. They received the Faculty Award of Distinction in 2017. In an effort to stimulate cultural discourse regarding underrepresented voices, they founded Cult Club, an online literary arts magazine dedicated to the intersection of arts and culture. They received their MFA in Media Art at UCLA and dual BAs in Art and Environmental Studies from UCSB.

Local Waves at The Local is a new free series at The Local curated by Mike Amari/Chosen Family in partnership with Wave Farm's WGXC featuring Hudson Valley artists performing original music.

Ongoing is a folk-rock group based in the Hudson Valley, NY. The band features lead vocals by Katie Jones, Adam Netsky of Maybird on drums, multi-instrumentalist Braden Bodensteiner and Jonathan Hudack on bass. Their music presents passionately delivered melodies, philosophical lyrics, as well as spirited and wild sonic textures.

When all the music ever created is a swipe away on your phone, it's easy to miss the incredible original artists who are making and releasing music right here in the Hudson Valley. This series will serve as an expansion of the Local Waves radio show I co-created with WGXC (which plays all new, local music every Friday 8pm) to further highlight these acts with a free, monthly concert in a fantastic venue at The Local. I hope that folks will use this series as a way of discovering new artists, and getting to know their neighbors in the process." - Mike Amari

On Saturday, June 13, join us at Wave Farm for Teresa Time, a performance and Art Park activation by artist-in-residence Camille Wong. At 12 p.m., Wong will present a lecture-performance at the Wave Farm Study Center. At 1 p.m., audience members will grab radio receivers and explore the Wave Farm grounds to experience a multi-frequency micro-broadcast installation.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) attempted to maintain strict control of the incoming media by banning, jamming, and disrupting the radio stations. Listeners in China resisted by adjusting the frequencies and recording live broadcasts onto cassette tapes.

Using micro FM-transmitters embedded throughout Wave Farm's grounds, Wong simulates the broadcasts of the Voice of Free China by transmitting “yellow” music at Wave Farm. Evoking James C. Scott’s concept of “peasant resistance,” listeners follow a set of instructions to hack and locate the frequencies of the broadcast.

Often performing in their films as both the filmmaker and subject, they challenge ideas of authorship, subjectivity, and the politicized body. Their recent work studies media, technologies, and rhetoric during the Cold War to understand its role in shaping cultural identities, global ideologies, and mass migration. They received their MFA in Media Art at UCLA and dual BAs in Art and Environmental Studies from UCSB.

Wave Farm and CREATE IN PROCESS present Soundshare, a space for audio/sound artists to gather, share, and collaborate. Participants are invited to the WGXC Catskill Studio to share pre-recorded or live works in a welcoming and communal space. All are welcome to come listen and discuss, though sharing is limited to four participants. Come meet fellow creatives, musicians, and performers!

These gatherings are free, but RSVP is required, whether sharing work or attending as a listener. Please submit requests to present work through the RSVP form. Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Each participant will have up to five minutes to share, and fifteen minutes of questions and offerings from the group.

Please bring a prepared dish and join us for a potluck following the sharing + feedback!

If sharing prerecorded work, participants should bring audio files on a thumb drive, laptop, or phone with adapters to ⅛” cable. If sharing work live, please email meredith@wavefarm.org to discuss technical needs. Please note that whether live or prerecorded, the work needs to be 5 minutes or less.
