New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA)'s ninth annual Radio Without Boundaries conference makes Deep Wireless an internationally sought after destination for those with a general interest in radio and transmission art, sound and radio artists and/or those who just want something more from radio. Radius Sketchpad is an ongoing monthly program on WGXC 90.7-FM presented by the Chicago-based platform, Radius. This month features Margaret Noble's Frakture: George Orwell’s Novel “1984” Remixed, originally produced for Radius, and is followed by a playlist of works selected by the artist.

WGXC 90.7-FM (a program of free103point9) is delighted to be a broadcast partner for the 2011 International Radiophonic Creation Day. International Radiophonic Creation Day is a biennal event honoring radio creation on its widest sense: soundscape, Hörspiel, radio drama, experimental music, various sounds. This 24-hour program will be broadcast simultaneously on WGXC and radio stations around the world. This year's program is available at http://shakerattleroll.parisson.org. Following the broadcast, a CD boxset containing the 24 hours of programming will be edited and will be distributed to all the participants and to arts centers, libraries, specialized bookshops.

This Wednesday night, listen to a six-hour program (midnight-6 a.m.) that will establish some of the themes of the upcoming Saturday series, Human-Machine, by Max. Goldfarb. Human-Machine is a program that presents music, performances and various lectures, interviews and other materials investigating the subject of the increasing convergence of humans and technology. Subjects include Robotics, Singularity, Autonomous War Machines, Nanotechnology, Prosthetics, Reanimation and Artificial Intelligence. Human-Machine is a program series made for Transmission Arts Programming on WGXC.

This performance features an interview with Angel Nevarez & Valerie Tevere including a playlist of works important to their artistic practice, and a special broadcast of the radio play What we might have heard in the future. Originally performed live on October 9, 2010 during the opening events of Manifesta 8 at Museo Hidráulico Molinos del Río Segura, and broadcast live on Onda Regional de Murcia 105.3 FM, Murcia, Spain, What we might have heard in the future. is a science-fiction based radio drama that investigates history in the future tense. This Spanish language broadcast considers the future's implementation of voice recognition technologies and questions the particular use of behavioral biometrics as authentication and validation of one's subjectivity. Such narrows parameters bring into question structures of power as processes of inclusion and exclusion in regard to representation and the voice. Angel Nevarez & Valerie Tevere have engaged in an artistic practice that focuses on architectures of broadcast, the particularities of historical resistant moments associated with the medium of radio, the re-articulation of radio programming, and the radio ‘voice’. Specific interests lie in the archeology of the medium’s history, the study of its architectural residues and monuments, and in considering new possibilities for the broadcast spectrum as discursive public space. Nevarez and Tevere have shown their work internationally (under the name neuroTransmitter from 2001-2008), performed and broadcasted live on local bandwidths, in public spaces, and museums including: The FM Ferry Experiment, on the Staten Island Ferry, NYC; WUNP unitednationsplaza, Berlin, Germany & Mexico City, MX; The New Museum, NY; viafarini, Milan, Italy; The Anna Akhmatova Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia; Govett Brewster Museum, New Plymouth, NZ; Centre d’Art Passerelle, Brest, France; Set & Drift, LMCC, Governor’s Island, NY; Eyebeam, NY; Museu da Imagem e do Som, Sao Paulo, Brazil; The Drawing Center, NY; and MOCAD, Detroit, MI; among others. Fellowships and grants include an Art Matters grant; a Creative Capital fellowship; New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship; National Endowment for the Arts project grant; Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Art in Public Places grant; and Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art Fellowship. Nevarez and Tevere have participated in artist residencies at IASPIS, Stockholm, Sweden; Eyebeam, NYC; Wave Farm, free103point9, Acra, NY; and with Fondazione Ratti, Como, Italy. The artists have lectured at Konstfack, Stockholm; the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at the New School; the Radio Lab at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany; NIFCA, Helsinki, Finland; and on the air in various locales.

Voder Deth Squad is the result of years of casual and serious cross-country collaboration between L.A. based M. Geddes Gengras and Hudson's Jeremy Kelly. Deep explorations of timbre and serious synthesizer worship create a continuity between Gengras' hurriedly lush moogscapes and Kelly's grittier, classically minded sound art, settling into a valley of infinite astral expansion. Artists Thomas Lail and Patrick Weklar of soundBarn in Valatie perform on WGXC. soundBarn is the experimental sound project of Thomas Lail and Patrick Weklar. soundBarn has been mining the possibilities of extreme guitar for years and the single long-form track of their new CD Valentine on Tape Drift Records finds the duo creating fields of sonic sprawl. Recorded live in the soundBarn-- their performance space/ studio at a turn of the century, rural, orchard in Valatie, NY-- soundBarn’s Thomas Lail and Patrick Weklar play prepared and altered guitars, overprocess signals and pile loops of sound to orchestrate an arching instrumental tale of creation and destruction.

soundBarn has recently collaborated with Albany Sonic Arts to stage expanded performances of composer Rhys Chatham’s famed Guitar Trio. soundBarn’s Weklar and Lail have been collaborating for over twenty years and were founding members of Upstate New York’s long-ago post-punk band, The Fauves.

The soundBarn-- a joint project of soundBarn and artist/gallerist Tara Fracalossi-- serves both as home for the duo and to host experimental music performances. soundBarn Press publishes limited editions of experimental writings and poetry complementing and furthering the commitment of The soundBarn to new and experimental forms. soundBarn Press inaugurated its publications with Lail’s May 08/ Feb 10, forthcoming publications include poetry by musician/visual artist/writer and founding member of rock band Sonic Youth, Lee Ranaldo and poetry/writings by artist James Cullinane.

Tune in for a live broadcast, on WGXC 90.7-FM, from transmission artist Damian Catera. Damian Catera is an electro-acoustic composer/guitarist, sound installation creator and media artist. Catera's work reflects interests in sound-based composition/ improvisation, transmission, and socio-political critique. Recently he's been performing improvised "deCompositions" for live electronics, radio, and guitar. Catera's "deCompositional" process consists of an expanded instrument system, which samples and probabilistically processes live sound with algorithms, which he wrote in the MAX/ MSP programming environment. The end product is a constantly evolving, machine-improvised soundscape that is distinct in each implementation. Catera's sound installations reflect his interest in site-specific sound manipulation and surveillance, which he achieves with software also written in the MAX/ MSP programming environment. Catera has performed improvised solo guitar/ radio/ computer-based pieces abroad and in the U.S. including New York venues the Knitting Factory, the Kitchen, and The Cooler among many others. He has also performed in the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Slovakia. In March of 2000 he performed in the "La Primavera en Habana" festival in Cuba. During the spring of 1999, Catera toured the United States with Japanese sound artist and Zeni Geva guitarist K.K. Null.

British artist Robin Rimbaud, Scanner, traverses the experimental terrain between sound, space, image and form, creating absorbing, multi-layered sound pieces that twist technology in unconventional ways. From his early controversial work using found mobile phone conversations, through to his focus on trawling the hidden noise of the modern metropolis as the symbol of the place where hidden meanings and missed contacts emerge, his restless explorations of the experimental terrain have led to an exhaustive list of international performances and exhibitions. Scanner has collaborated with artists from every imaginable genre: musicians Bryan Ferry, Radiohead and Laurie Anderson, The Royal Ballet and Merce Cunningham and Random Dance companies, composers Michael Nyman and Luc Ferrari, and artists Mike Kelley, Derek Jarman, and Douglas Gordon

When a mysterious blonde saunters into the office of private detective John Skoog, to contract him to find her younger sister Rhoda Pulaski, who has gotten involved with a bad and violent man in Great Falls, Montana, Skoog's life descends into a maelstrom of murder, black outs, frame-ups and ultimate release. It's always raining in the Tenderloin and not even a surprise visit from his favorite call girl Vanna Laforge can get private detective John Skoog up and out of the doldrums and make him forget the horrible events of his last case in Great Falls, Montana.

Episode 2 - Stakeout (Monday night). After a late night visit from a call girl with a problem, John Skoog finds himself parked on another stakeout, smack in the middle of Montana. He's about to find out just how real things can get in America.

Episode 3 - Vanna (Tuesday night). Unable to forget, John Skoog starts to push away what he cares for most. A surprise encounter awaits in his dreams.

Episode 4 - Bad Tidings (Wednesday night). With Vanna gone, John Skoog decides to drink himself into a stupor, heading straight for a night in the clink and a morning full of unsettling news. A surprise encounter awaits in his dreams.

Episode 5 - L-U-V (Thursday night). After the untimely demise of the love his life, John Skoog faces one tough decision. Will he opt for revenge or try to move on?

July 18 is World Listening Day, but WGXC and free103point9 celebrate with a week of special late-night broadcasts (1 a.m to 6 a.m.) on WGXC 90.7-FM devoted to acoustic ecology, field recordings, and listening-focused programming. The first World Listening Day was co-organized by the World Listening Project (WLP) and Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE) in 2008. A date of July 18 was chosen to acknowledge the birthday of Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, who established the World Soundscape Project in the late-60s at Simon Fraser University. Schafer’s 1977 book, The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World was a culminating publication about the research of the World Soundscape Project that provided a foundation for the interdisciplinary field now known as Acoustic Ecology. You will hear frogs and chickens from Greene County, buses and trains from cities around the world, and all sorts of other sounds.

Soundwalk, a New York-based sound-art collective, will embark aboard a sailboat equipped with radio scanners, microphones, and aerial antennae, recording all audible and inaudible frequencies as they sail along the shores of the Black Sea over a period of one month. From Istanbul to the Crimean peninsula, like fisherman Soundwalk members will remix their 'catch of the day' into musical transmissions. A weekly half-hour program will be produced for broadcast on WGXC's Saturday Transmission Arts programming.

The publication of "Transmission Arts: Artists and Airwaves" (PAJ Publications, 2011) by Galen Joseph-Hunter, Penny Duff & Maria Papadomanolaki is officially here at this book launch with radio art performances. This work considers a new art genre, and "Transmission Arts: Artists & Airwaves" brings together a genealogy of 150 artists and artworks — and more than 250 images — from 1921 to the present that encompasses performance, video, radio theater, sound art, media installation, networked art, and acoustic ecology. This is an account of the ingenuity and creativity of artists who have made new discoveries in broadcast, public works, performance composition, sound, and text, stretching the boundaries of both transmitter and receiver. At a time when public access struggles with corporate control of the airwaves, artists have combined activism and communications technologies to represent alternative worlds on the electromagnetic spectrum. Reading and remarks from Galen Joseph-Hunter and Bonnie Marranca. Live performances from Maria Papadomanolaki, Matt Bua, and Tom Roe. Many of this project's authors and artists will be in attendance.
