Tune in to WGXC 90.7-FM for a special performance from Latitude/Longitude's Michael Garofalo and Jason Labbe. Latitude/Longitude is a Brooklyn-based experimental music group that began as a duo, Michael Garofalo and Patrick McCarthy, in 2004. They became a trio in 2007, adding percussionist Jason Labbe. Latitude/Longitude work with diverse sonic materials: test oscillators, homemade cassette tape and field recordings, radio transmissions (FM/AM/SW/CB), toy electronics (broken and functional), and percussive junk, as well as more traditional instruments, such as pedal steel guitar, banjo, mbira, drums, cymbals, and voice.

Hudson-based artist Jeremy Kelly, who co-hosts Human Machine: 9 a.m. Saturdays) performs live from the WGXC Hudson studio.

Tune in for a live broadcast, on WGXC 90.7-FM, from internationally renowned artists Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson. Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson have worked collaboratively since 1998. They have exhibited internationally at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; 3rd Bucharest Biennial of Young Artists, Romania; Radio Web MACBA, Barcelona, Spain; Sadler’s Wells, London; The Nordic Art Video Festival, Sweden; 2004 Gwangju Biennale, South Korea; E-Flux Video Rental (various); and Espace Paul Ricard, Paris. They have exhibited in the United States at museums, galleries, and art centers including SculptureCenter, New York; Exit Art, New York; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Center for Contemporary Art Santa Fe, New Mexico; The Museum of Art & Design, New York; New Sound New York Festival, The Kitchen; Bronx Museum of the Arts, NY ; and Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, NY. Dubbin & Davidson have collaborated on projects with Pierre Huyghe, Morton Subotnick, LOT/EK, Woody & Steina Vasulka, and free103point9 among others. Tune in for a live broadcast, on WGXC 90.7-FM, featuring art historian, writer, and archivist Barbara Moore. Moore manages the estates of both the avant-garde cellist Charlotte Moorman, and Moore's late husband, Peter Moore, who documented the New York performance avant-garde of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. From 1976 until 2004, she was also a rare book dealer specializing in this rich period in New York's vanguard. Currently, Moore is working on writing a book: "Observing the Avant-Garde: Peter Moore & The Photography of Performance; New York, NY." On August 20, Barbara Moore will be joined in conversation with Bonnie Marranca, publisher and editor of the Obie Award-winning PAJ Publications and PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art (originally called Performing Arts Journal).

Radius Sketchpad is an ongoing monthly program on WGXC 90.7-FM presented by the Chicago-based platform, Radius. This month features C.R. Kasprzyk's 07.13.10b, originally produced for Radius, and is followed by a playlist of works selected by the artist.

In conjunction with a staggering array of events celebrating the John Cage Centennial in 2012, free103point9 and the John Cage Trust are pleased to announce an open call for proposals around Cage's compositions with, for, and about radio. Selected proposals will be broadcast on free103point9's FM radio station (WGXC 90.7-FM in upstate New York) and streamed online throughout a month-long program September 2012.

For a special conversation between Laura Kuhn of the John Cage Trust and free103point9's (WGXC's parent organization) Executive Director, Galen Joseph-Hunter. This broadcast will feature an an exciting announcement about an international open call for works, presented in collaboration by The John Cage Trust and free103point9, as well as preview events being produced in celebration of the John Cage Centennial in 2012.

Laura Kuhn enjoys a lively career as a writer, performer, scholar, and arts administrator. She worked during graduate school years in the early 1980s with the Russian-born infant terrible of American musicology, Nicolas Slonimsky, becoming successor editor upon his death of his acclaimed music dictionaries Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians and Music Since 1900. In 1986, upon completion of her M.A. degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (her thesis a comparative study of the theoretical ideas of German composer Richard Wagner with the montage film theory of Russian director Sergei Eisenstein), she also began working with the American composer, poet, visual artist, and philosopher John Cage in New York on a variety of large-scale projects, including his six “mesostic” lectures for Harvard University as holder of the Charles Eliot Norton Chair in Poetry (published as I-VI, Harvard University Press, 1990) and his first full-scale opera, Europeras 1 & 2, for the Frankfurt Opera (subsequently the subject of her 1992 doctoral dissertation from U.C.L.A., John Cage’s “Europeras 1 & 2”: The Musical Means of Revolution). From 1991 to 1996 she served as one of ten founding faculty members at Arizona State University West in Phoenix, where she helped to develop and implement an innovative Interdisciplinary Arts & Performance program. Simultaneously, upon Cage’s death in 1992, she worked with Cage’s long-time friends and associates Merce Cunningham, Anne d’Harnoncourt, and David Vaughan to found the John Cage Trust, which she continues to serve as Executive Director. In this capacity, Kuhn travels extensively, lecturing and conducting performance workshops in venues as diverse as the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Warsaw’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Brussels’ “International Arts Festival.” In 1999 she even prepared a macrobiotic dinner for 80 to celebrate the first-ever installation of Cage’s celebrated Roaratorio: An Irish Circus on Finnegans Wake at Belfast’s “Queens Festival”! Other projects for the John Cage Trust under her direction have included a CD-ROM of sampled piano preparations from Cage’s landmark composition, Sonatas & Interludes (1946-48) for use by MIDI keyboard musicians, and the adaptation of Cage’s whimsical 1982 radio play, James Joyce, Marcel Duchamp, Erik Satie: An Alphabet, to the stage, which in 2000-2001 she directed in seven venues around the world. In 1999, on a bit of a lark, she also joined the onstage singing cast of Mikel Rouse’s irreverent ���talk-show” opera, Dennis Cleveland, last mounted at N.Y.’s Lincoln Center in May 2002. In 2007, the John Cage Trust went into residential placement at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson New York, where Kuhn became the first John Cage Professor of Performance Arts. In celebration, she directed a fully staged version of Cage’s still politically prescient theater piece, Lecture on the Weather, with an all-star cast that included Cunningham, Jasper Johns, John Ashbery, Leon Botstein, John Ralston Saul, John Kelly, and others. She is currently working with the Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Ken Silverman on The John Cage Correspondence Collection for Wesleyan University Press (2011).

Learn how to record local events and get them played on the radio. WGXC Program Director will train volunteers in how to use digital audio recorders, or cell phones, to record local meetings, workshops, performances, readings, speeches, and other events. There will also be a brief overview of the audio editing program Audacity, plus other elements in getting local recordings on WGXC 90.7-FM.

Tune into WGXC 90.7-FM for a special live broadcast featuring visting AIRtime artist Judy Dunaway. Judy Dunaway presents two hours of transmission art for WGXC, featuring live performances by area artists and live telematic collaborations. Saxophonist Chris Kelsey will present the U.S. premiere of Judy Dunaway's composition "On The Air" for saxophone, balloon samples and radio static. Electronic musician Doug Van Nort of Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute will collaborate with Dunaway in an improvisation of processed of live signals. Improvising vocalists Jill Burton of Gainesville, Florida and Richard Curtis of Huntsville, Alabama will participate via phone presenting special Hudson-area-based texts. (Kelsey, Van Nort, Burton and Curtis have worked with Dunaway in the past year in various telematic collaborations transmitted over Blogtalkradio.com.) Additionally, students from Pauline Oliveros' Fall 2011 "Deep Listening" class at RPI will be phoning in sounds live throughout the broadcast.

Dunaway will also speak about her previous works involving radio, phones and internet sound, and play some excerpts from these project.

Judy Dunaway is a composer, improvisor and conceptual artist who is primarily known for her sound works for latex balloons. Since 1990 Judy Dunaway has composed over thirty works for balloons as instruments and has also made this her main instrument for improvisation. She has performed this work throughout North America and Europe and has received numerous grants for her work. Her discography includes CDs on the CRI and Innova labels. She has also produced many lesser-known transmission art works (many of which do not use balloons), and was recently included in Galen Joseph-Hunter's book "Transmission Arts."

Chris Kelsey is a writer and saxophonist living in Dutchess County, NY. Chris contributes regularly to Jazz.com and JazzTimes. He’s recorded sev eral albums, most recently Not Cool ( … as in, ‘The Opposite of Paul Desmond’) for his own Tzazz Kry tyk label. He’s also recorded several albums for the the CIMP label.

Doug Van Nort is an experimental musician and digital music researcher whose work is dedicated to sound exploration through composition, improvisation, installation, interactive system design, curation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Van Nort is a member of the improvisational trio Triple Point with Pauline Oliveros and Jonas Braasch, wherein he plays his custom GREIS software designed for on-the-fly spectral and textural sound transformations. This group also collaborates through research and teaching, and in this context Van Nort has been actively designing and creating an intelligent system for improvisation, currently as research associate in music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Jill Burton is a singular and extraordinary performance artist, vocalist, dancer and energy worker who has been consciously synthesizing her art form for over 40 years. With an extensive background in many traditional and modern music and dance techniques, she has always held a special interest in experimental performance and free improvisation. She has also studied and practiced many bodywork, energy work and spiritual healing modalities, always incorporating these with her performance work. Jill lived in Sitka, Alaska for 6 years, where she was honored to provide musical accompaniment for Tlingit storyteller/shamans.

Richard Curtis has developed extended vocal techniques drawing on a range of influences such as jazz, sound art, Dada sound poetry, experimental improv music, Foley sound effects, environmental sounds and ethnopoetics. He has studied traditional vocal techniques with the Zulu and Maasai people in Africa. He has an MFA from the School of the Art Institute.
