Special guests Tamara Yadao and Jeremy D. Slater, also known as tū, are an audiovisual performance duo. Their sound work uses field recordings, spoken word, ambient noise and drones created with oscillators, guitars, radios, voice, and other objects. Investigations include the collective experience of listening in the medium of radio, liminal relationships in sound juxtaposition, phonemic reduction and memory differentiation of sound and signifier.

Literary reading at The Spotty Dog Books & Ale in Hudson, NY. Rebecca Wolf is the editor of Fence Magazine. Each is celebrating the publication of a new book; Sher's second novel, The Singer, was released earlier this year, and Wolff, driving force behind literary magazine Fence, had her latest collection of poetry The King, hit shelves in late June. We would like to invite you to a meeting of local journalists Thu. Aug. 20. One meeting will be at 10 a.m. in Hudson and one at 6 p.m. in Catskill. If you write for a local newspaper, do your own blog, or other independent recording, you are invited. Photographers too!
There are two purposes for the meetings:

1) Introduce local journalists to WGXC, and talk about ideas to work together. Erin Roberts, who is working with WGXC and used to work with KBUT in Colorado will be there. She will explain a system her community radio station used that trained print journalists to become audio reporters, and then paid them an additional fee for their audio work. This might be one model we use at WGXC. But we also want to hear your ideas, and see how you think the new community radio station might work with your newspaper, blog, or media outlet.

2) See if we can form a loose alliance of all local newspapers, radio stations, writers, blogs, etc. to co-sponsor candidate forums and debates. Again, we are looking for your ideas.

For both of these topics, we will not lecture to you, or tell you how things have to be. WGXC is interested in working with the local journalism industry, just like all other industries, so that all parties benefit. For this meeting we will listen to your ideas.

Many local journalists have already contacted us and seem very interested in being involved somehow in the new community radio station. We hope this meeting can be the first step toward making that happen. WGXC will certainly be reporting news on its own, and DJs and hosts will undoubtedly be talking about your stories on the air too. And at the very least, I think it will be nice to have a bunch of local writers in a room meeting each other and talking about the state of local journalism.

Carrie Haddad Photographs invites you to the latest installment of our ongoing series of Photographer Talks, discussions by photographers about their work. On August 29th Robert Flynt, David Lebe and Gary Schneider reflect upon their respective work, currently on view in our exhibition “Afterglow: Four Photographers and the Hand-Held Light." Using long camera exposures in dark spaces, these photographers each in distinct and idiosyncratic ways, carve out images – tracing a body’s contour or marking empty space – with light. Movement in these works is not implied, but rather inscribed: it literally becomes part of the image. In their work the camera captures far more than the naked eye. Join us as Flynt, Lebe and Schneider each elucidate their creative process and shed light on what drives them to make the work they do. Afterglow show open July 16 – August 30, 2009. The Provenance of Beauty is a poetic travelogue performed on a bus touring the South Bronx. As we travel the streets of the neighborhood, Rankine's evocative text points out and reflects upon the sites that pass by outside the windows. Views that to an outsider might go by unnoticed - a factory dressed up as townhouses, the theatre where La Lupe held court that is now a church - complicated places that ask what creates a neighborhood in a city in a country in the world.

The audience boards the bus in Spanish Harlem, puts on headphones and for 90 minutes eavesdrops on the voice - both live and recorded - of this historic place. Provenance is an experience that both responds to and redoubles the landscape - its sites, history, present and future - mapping out a poetic cartography of a neighborhood - of any neighborhood - in its eternal state of evolution.

The Foundry Theatre aspires to assemble a community of artists with revolutionary ideas for the theatre.
