DiNapoli faces three others in debate

Oct 15, 2018 11:15 am
Bill Mahoney reports at Politico New York that the four men who want to be New York's Comptroller debated Oct. 14 in Manhattan. Incumbent Democrat Tom DiNapoli, Republican Jonathan Trichter, Mark Dunlea from the Green Party, and Libertarian Cruger Gallaudet were all on stage, but DiNapoli, leading in the polls, took the spotlight. He attacked Trichter, for previously working on Democrats' campaigns, and now running as a Republican. "If you had to sell yourself to get the nomination," DiNapoli said, "I don’t think that’s the best standard to be running for office.” Trichter shot back, “The powers of the office are formidable; [DiNapoli is] the sole trustee of the $200 billion pension fund.... It’s the market power of a Saudi prince. And this comptroller has basically covered up his pension performance and his investment performance.” A Siena College poll earlier this month had DiNapoli leading by 58 percent to 26 percent for his Republican opponent. So Libertarian Cruger Gallaudet was free to tell the truth about what in his background would make him a good comptroller. “You want honesty? Not a whole lot,” he replied. “I’ve held no office other than the Board of Education in Tuckahoe, but what I would bring is a fresh pair of eyes.... We all know DiNapoli’s going to win this race. I’m not saying it’s a fait accompli, but it’s pretty dead certain.” Read the full story at Politico New York.
